Build backlinks to Domain or to Subdomain?

Hello guys!

When I visit alexadotcom and try to figure out the number of backlinks which lead to my squidoo lens it shows 120k backlinks which lead to squidoodotcom and not to squidoodotcom/my_lense.

After this factor I came across that if you build backlinks to your home page only, then it is like building backlinks to your subdomains... I mean that you don't have to build backlinks to your subsdomain in order to optimize it..but you can optimize it by build backlinks only to your domain.

Am I right guys?

    You can do both. Both are gonna help your site get some authority and pagerank. Also, try to do relevant niche related link building. That is more important and will be more helpful.

    I think you also need to do both so that it looks more natural. If other website owners are linking to you they are not going to link to one or the other, over time you will get links to both.

      You people are very mixed up.

      First, squidoo.com/whatever is not a subdomain.

      Second, if you build links to squidoo.com, then the links are
      for squidoo.com. Not your lens! Links to
      the main domain are not links to your individual lens.

      Third, alexa is just mashing things up, as most of those link
      checkers do. They are somehow counting links to
      squidoo.com, and not your page. Typical. It does not
      mean your lens has 120K backlinks by any stretch of
      the imagination.

      If you build links to a squidoo lens, you MUST build the links to
      your individual lens. Not squidoo.com. That would be absolutely
      ridiculous and a complete waste of time.

      When working on YOUR OWN dot com, if everything is readily
      linked off of the main index page, then just build the majority
      of links to that page. PR and authority flow downhill. Internal
      links count like gold. Now and again, build links to individual
      pages.

      Getting back to subdomains. Subdomains do not get any love
      from the main domain. They are treated as separate domains.
      Unless you are internally linking to them as well, you will
      get no love.

    How many links do you see pointing to your lens page from the homepage? None. Which means no juice is passing through to your lens. You need to build links directly to the page.

    Btw a subdomain is "subdomain.example.com" not "example.com/notsubdomain"
