Fast Question About Domains and SEO

Hi,
I have a freind who is inquiring about changing the domain of her site to something very similar....and how that would effect her SEO standings which are #1 in most targeted keywords.

She targets a local area only...not national or international....the website itself would not change (page content, etc...)

Could she expect a dramatic change in her SEO rankings?

    Yes. It will take time for a new domain to bounce back, or rather back UP the rankings.. It's the same as creating a new site (on- and off-site optimization), creating content (unique or duplicated), and then climbing up the SERPs.

      If her stuff is indexed, why on earth would she change domain
      to a similar domain? That's crazy. Especially that she is
      now #1.

      What does she want? #0.5?

      Where did she get some mad idea to change domains?

    Yes, according to me in such cases the best option is always to redirect to a new domain.

    If the only issue is the domain name, she can just redirect her entire site (301 redirects) to the new domain, webpage-to-webpage, preserving its structure and content in full.

    Special attention should be paid to keeping the existing interlinking of pages, robots.txt instructions and canonical URL attributes (if there are any on the site).

    Afterwards, let her re-submit the updated sitemap to the search engines.
