How do I find out?

I had ranked on page one for a good keyword for over a year. Often in the #1 spot. One google update seemed to knock me down to #8 and the next sent me to oblivion. Gone. I assume that I was way over optimized for that keyword. So, my traffic is way down and I was wondering if there is a way to find out for sure what did it and how to fix it. I seem to know just enough to get myself in trouble!

Hmm, you got a double EMD domain...meaning you been penalized twice.

  Yes it is! I have a gazillion backlinks, etc. to one of the two. At the time it was ok. Not so much now. A lot of work and expense down the tubes. The question is can it be fixed?
  
  I still have page rank and have decent placement for a couple of lesser value keywords (so I'm not blacklisted).

I believe your website has penalized under EMD (exact matching domain) update.Your domain has two keywords stuffed so probably it could be the reason.But I will recommend you to analyze your website completely and only then you will bale to figure out the exact reason of your keywords dropping.

Google now looks at the relevant of the back links. Back links that are not relevant have cause even some of the biggest companies to drop off the radar.

That is why link farms are a dying thing. Yes unfortunately in light of the new changes with Google, your domain name has become a no no.

Depending on how many posts you have you could go back and check some of the back links but this could be very time consuming if you are going to do it yourself.

Take a look at the Google Chrome Chartelligence plugin, it can help pinpoint which updates hit you hardest - EMD no doubt contributed to the penalty but can't do any harm in doing a few easy extra checks.
