I have some SEO employees who seem to just make profiles with links to my site,

is this a total waste of time?

are they doing anything more than a software like xrumer could do? (and I don't want to use software, I'm just saying)

If they are doing it real cheap then let them do it but recommend them to ping all those profiles so that search engine spiders can crawl.

However, profile links are not going to work alone and you really need to do social bookmarking, article submission, directory submission and some blog network posting.

Well, they are doing the same as a software would do and in more time.

You were being sarcastic, right? Because all of those ideas suck.

      LOL.

Trust me: spend more time building awesome content and less time worrying about keyword density and building profile links and you'll make a lot more money.

Profile links only work if you aree active in those forums or sites. You'll need to provide some value in those sites and appear as an authority or at least knowledgeable figure in your niche, and you'll acutally get pretty good link juice out of those profile links. It signals the same thing to Google which recognizes your reputation.

But otherwise, those pure profile links will be seen as spam. This is what I'd highly recommend you to do, or tell your workers to do. Make a few posts on those site for a at least a few days, and ping all the posts, to build your reputation instead. Stop building any more profile links till then.

  • Believe me, if you use just just link profiles to increase your link popularity you will sink your site's incoming traffic. Google algos have this angle figured for a while now.

profiles can be part of the complete SEO breakfast, you just have to know how to build them correctly, and have a few other legs to stand on; don't rely on strictly profiles to rank your site, this isn't 2004 anymore.
