Which is better: Customer courtesy or annoying SEO?

OK, I can't seem to get my head around this one.

I've taken over a site that has a plethora of hybrid links on the same site (and they're all in red!). I know that cross-linking is good, but when does it become so annoying (too many) that the visitor will just choke and leave?

Paradise Springs

Is there some healthy balance? Any rules of thumb from some old wise SEO expert here? Damn the torpedoes?

Confused,
Paul

    I must say it does look a little strange. What you could do is edit the style.css file for the theme to make the links less obvious. Paste the following bit of code that the bottom of the style.css file and see if it looks better:

    .entry-content a {
    font-family:'trebuchet ms', verdana, sans-serif;
    text-decoration:none;
    }

    a {
    color:#000000;
    text-decoration:none;
    }

    This code will remove the underline on the links and change the colour for the links back to black.

    Whatever we do online, is pertinent to understand that customer is the reason for setting website not Search engine as such customer should be given priority. Look at the site in angle of customer or visitor you will know better the best thing to do.

      Is the 7 different anchor-text pointing at a single URL in your forum sig. a good user experience or is that just for Google?

        Um, I'm not sure what you are referring to. I went to my Edit Signature and there is nothing there, so what do you mean by 7 different anchor-text pointing at a single URL in the forum sig.

    Thanks guys. Yes, I'm well aware of the strangeness of the approach (which is why I call it annoying). I'm looking for rules of thumb. E.g. how many links "should" be on a page (given blue non-underlined links)?

    BTW, the new site is MUCH more organic, engaging, appropriate, well-structured site:

    As a rule of thumb I only interlink 2-3 times per post. Anything more is overboard...for SEO and user experience.
