I currently have a website where the main idea is to list different websites. Currently I'm listing the websites with an image that links to an internal page with content about that certain website. The alt-tag contains the name of each website. Currently I'm listing about 15-20 websites of this kind in a simple table. To me this looks really like crap when it comes to design but that's because of the poor designed websites I have listed.

My first question. I know Google made an update a few months ago where advertising above fold has a negative result in serps, which makes sense. Do you think my images appear as advertising to Google? The images doesn't link directly to that website, instead they link to an other page which consists of information only about that website and on that page I have a link to the website.

Now to my other question. What would you choose to do?

1. Remove the images and have their names instead?

2. Keep the images.

Edit: A text would maybe be better as then the website would get more text content and that's good I suppose. But at the same time it may be confusing for Google to rank my site if I have 15 different website names on my website including my own text content which is not much. Let me give you an example:

Fox SEO Company
Wolf Furnitures
Sweet Apples and Oranges

(Usually the names are longer and consists of a longer description of the sites)

As you see the names are a bit random and may not really give any worthy content to Google anyway?

  • Noyes,

You are right that Google has been penalizing sites that have too many ads above the fold however they can tell the difference between ads and plain images. Also, this applies to excessive ads and not necessarily one or two ads that appear above the fold.

Whether you have images or text doesn’t much matter but having content on the pages will help you rank better. It is best to use one target keyword per page so having random text on the different pages may not be beneficial. Try to have a theme for each page of your site. If you aren’t targeting any keywords to rank for then I wouldn’t worry about it much.

Here is a good post on ranking images,
