Hi,

When picking a domain name for an authority site,

if GreatDomainName.com is taken and just parked,

is it best to build on TheGreatDomainName.com

or build on GreatDomainName.net

or should I just look for another name??

    Hi Abdullah,

Go for the .com every time.

    Warmest regards,

If you want to stack the copywriting deck in your favor with tricks and hacks producing winners like: "$20K in three days" "650 sold" "30% conversion", then you might like to know I'm retiring and will spill the beans to two people. More info here.

If you're wanting to build an authority site I would look at domain age more than .com vs .net.

Build yourself a short list of suitable domains and then have a closer look at them, you might be surprised by what you find. 30 mins ago I registered a .net but it's 13 years old and already has backlinks from the niche I'm targeting. I would guess that it will beat out a brand new .com with 'the' placed in front of the keyword.

I use market samurai's seo competition module to do a first check on the domains, takes 30 secs.

I don't think you understand what authority site is. Authority is given to a GREAT site after being active for many years in its community.

Grind a brandable and easy to remember domain name, not a keyword.

      This.

Exact match domains are worth a little less now than previously, anyway.

But in general, with domain-names, if you need to add something to your major keyword, it's always better to put the additional letters/word/words after the keyword than before it. "KeywordXYZ.com" is a much better domain-name than "TheKeyword.com". For SEO purposes, resale value, customer perception and I think almost any other way you might want to look at it, too.

Who said I'm looking for a keyword-domain name??

I like short, brandable and easy to remember domain names too.

But often I find them taken and just parked.

Maybe I should look for a service someone finding me a brandable domain name??

Do anyone know a service like that?? (I don't mean the domain name generators).

According to Adam Short (the guy who runs Niche Profit Classroom), a .org is better than a .net.

Just thought I'd throw that out here. I've never done any testing myself.

Personally, I will ALWAYS go with a .com when building a long term website. Just a few of the many important reasons are:

    - If you build up a site using anything but a .com, you're going to lose up to 30% of your traffic to the .COM owner. People will type in .com by habit even if they know your site is .net or .org or .info etc. That's why all the big players own and redirect the .com version of their domain even if they are using the alternate version as their main site (i.e. craigslist.com redirects to the main site, craigslist.org).

    - In search engine results, everything else being equal, people will click on a .com link more than any other type.

    - .COM is perceived as the authority. When people see .net, they often get the impression that you settled for second best. Depending on your target audience, .org will be perceived as a non-business site. When you hit them with a commercial website on a .org, there is a mental disconnect.

    - Other media advertising. If you ever plan on promoting your website via radio, TV, newspaper, other printed media, it's a huge mistake to use anything but a .com (unless you also own the .com and are redirecting an alternate TLD to the .com).

    - Resale or equity value: As a professional domainer, I can tell you in no uncertain terms that .COM will hold a much higher value if you ever decide to move on and sell your domain/website.

Many more reasons, but the bottom line is, if you want to build an authority site, you must own the .com.

Are these your personal views or do you have some stats to back this up? I have .net sites that are authority sites that average over 10k unique visitors a day. I also have a .info site that does very well as well.

They are my observations based on 9 years of full time domaining experience. Yes, .net, .org or any other TLD can do as well as a .com. There are many alternate TLDs that run circles around .coms. If your main site is a .net, regardless of how successful it is, you can be sure that a significant number of people are going to the .com website first. That is an important traffic/money leak to be aware of. Virtually every major website that uses a .net or .org also owns the .com to prevent this leak.

    I like Short domains
I also like .COM domain with brandable or keywords But my first favourite is Short. Why?
Because it's easy to remember the name , easy to create brand logo, magazine...etc..
So i think about the future of its, what can i do with the domain if it's my company or my business.

I prefer short original and memorable domain names without keywords in them.

Think tumblr.com type names. Those are my favorite domains
