question about 301 redirect

I have a wordpress site.I need to change my domain name. I bought it when exact match domains were still popular but I don't like it anymore.
I was advised to use 301 redirect method as it's the most search engine friendly one.
So, firstly I bought the new domain name from Godaddy. Then I updated its nameservers so that they point to my Hostgator account.
Lastly I set it as an addon domain.
Next I'm gonna make the 301 redirect as explained in the video below.

My questions are
1.Do I have to install wordpress on the new domain?
2.Do I have to transfer the files from the old domain to the new domain?
3.Where should I put my new content after the redirect, to the old domain or to the new domain?
4. What will the adress bar show after the redirect, the old domain or new domain?

Just go into your wordpress install and set the URL as your new URL. You'll just need to change the URL of your images to match your new domain. Then, 301 redirect your old domain through your registrar (GoDaddy etc)

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

The 301 only redirects teh traffic. It doesnt redirect the website. Look into backup buddy to move the actual website.

What? 301's are Search Engine Friendly redirects. Are all of your posts about spewing out crap?

Hate to be captain obvious but if you run a 301 redirect because you are moving an old website to a new address you cant just run a 301 and have the website magically appear at the new URL you actually have to move the content.

He wants to move his content over and salvage page rank & authority. How isn't a 301 redirect recommended here? Do tell me.

I said he needed to do a 301 redirect.... but that he also should look into backupbuddy to migrate the site.... seriously are you slow?

He doesn't need backupbuddy though, he's redirected his new domain via DNS and nameservers. He can simply change the URL within wp-admin (as I did yesterday). It's the same host, all of the posts are still there. You suggested a 301 only redirects visitors, thus implying that he shouldn't be using it.

You can ask your hosting company to do most of it for you. Some may charge but no more then $15 and saves you time

You're all giving the wrong answers. He's pointed his NEW site to his OLD site. Same hosting account.

Go into WP-admin. Go to settings, general.

Change OLD url to NEW url.

Fixed, sorted, nothing else to change.

The hostgator guy spent an hour to fix it.
      Maybe I did sth wrong

Weird. The only thing that should happen is that Images and self-hosted files that you have linked to don't show (in which case, just change the URL of them). I've done this many times when site's get penalized and I just switch the content over.

I have just received an answer from Hostgator upon request. However it's complicated and I'm very confused as I have been searching this only for the last two days. Could you please help me understand it?
    Here it is,
"Wordpress adds some confusion because it contains its own internal redirects based on the Home and Site URL. Here is our support article with more information, and instructions on how to change it. You would change it if you decided to copy your wordpress to a new domain, and wanted it to display with the new domain's URL.
WordPress Home Fix « HostGator.com Support Portal

I will answer you questions here.

    1. A new install is not required for a redirect.

    2. If you want wordpress do display as newdomain.com URL, and want the same content as olddomain.com, you will want to copy the content and install from olddomain.com to newdomain.com and fix the home and site URL as in the article above.

    3. If you redirect your site from newdomain.com to olddomain.com, you will continue to update the content on olddomain.com. However, If you copy your content over you will have two different word press installs with different content that could get out of sync.

    4. A redirect causes the site to load the content from the site it is pointed at including the URL. A parked domain or masked forward would not. However the wordpress internal redirect will cause errors, and parked domains are not raked well with the Google algorithm either.

Here is information on parked domains for your review.
