Under Traffic Sources > SEO > Queries,

it says the average position for the keyword I'm targeting is 13.

What does this mean?

Because I'm going through the SERPs and I'm finding the first result at 31, and a few others in the 60's.

The queries are all from the US. I'm in Canada. I'm advised to use google.com/ncr to see US based results, but I get the above results.

So what does the average position really mean???

  • Great question ochaim,

The average positions SEO report in analytics uses a formula to determine the average postion of your website based on user queries. Note that this formula takes into account any URL that was displayed in search that relates to your website. Also note that this does not mean any given Google search performed on your machine or anywhere else will yield the same position results. A user’s location, their prior search history, their social activity and other factors are taken into account when serving up results in an SERP. As such, you will get very different results from some other person somewhere else performing a query and you will definitely get different results when looking at the SEO report and then trying to recreate the data in a standard Google search on your machine.

The formula and this report are explained here,

    Hope that helps,

Google positions are not constant... they vary frequently. Some people also call it Google dance. Average position is deduced after some calculations done on the basis of ranking fluctuations.
