Track conversions from SEO, PPC and other advertising traffic

I'm about to start an aggressive marketing campaign with one of my sites, and wondering what methods you guys use to separate and track the conversions coming in from organic searches (google especially) adwords (actually I've got this one covered with google's conversion tracking), direct traffic and a banner ad from another site.
I guess for the banner ad, I could use a query string that's carried through to the end of the process and checks out at the conversion spot, but would there be a better (more elegant) way of doing it?
