301 redirect solution?

Hi all,

Ever since Penguin came out last year, one of my authority sites have gotten penalized by Google and traffic is now 90% down of what it should be at its height.

Prior to that, I have gotten the infamous Unnatural Links notice from Google in WMT, and after spending months removing the links, I have gotten a notice that the Manual Penalty has been revoked.

However, traffic has never recovered, and all my past rankings for even mildly profitable keywords are nowhere to be seen. It has been months since I got the penalty "lifted" and nothing has changed in Google. Only the most obscure terms on my site get any ranking at all...a clear sign of Penguin.

I think there may be an algo penalty still over my site from Penguin.

So I am very seriously considering recreating the site on a new domain and 301-redirecting the present site to the new domain. I have already cloned the entire site on the new domain and the only step left is to 301 the old domain.

Before I do that, I'd like to ask for hopefully some solid advice from those more knowledgeable in this 301-for-SEO-purposes stuff.....

Will it affect my remaining rankings in other search engines? Should I take the gamble?

You understand that the LINKS are the problem. The "penalties" or algorithmic changes from the recent updates (likely) include things such as anchor text over-optimization etc.etc..

If you do a 301...you basically tell google do take all the screwed up links which cause the "penalty" in the first place...and redirect it to the new site. BAD IDEA.

I am only planning to 301 for a while (maybe 3-4 months), and then delete the old site for good. The point of the 301 is so that the other search engines (Bing/Yahoo/etc) can recognize the change and perhaps transition over. Otherwise, I lose ALL my traffic. Right now, I still have good rankings in all other search engines.....apart from nasty Google.

I also plan to contact the sites of the "good" links that used to point to my site and ask them to change their links. BTW, how do I edit my present Wikipedia links?

I do have quite a number of "good" and unsolicited links from various websites....
Also, I have been reading on others experiences with 301 on the web.

Apparently, many of the 301 experiments turned out well, but I would like to hear from others here.

I would be more interested to hear from you what happens after you cloned the site (assuming you really did a 1:1 copy, no re-writes etc.).
Give it a month...no 301 etc... and report what you observe. Let's put it that way..if it ALREADY got slapped, what can you lose?

The question here whether moving the duplicate content makes really sense as a way to "recover" a site.
