Link Building in 2013 - What's Effective Now?

Hi,

What do you find effective & Google-ethical/compatible in 2013 for link building?

I've been buying 1-2 directory links, been releasing guest articles with embedded links and been leaving forum signatures, as well as blog comments with links.

Effect is very weak on a new site launched last September.
From 50-60 visitors/month in September I pushed it up to abut 500 monthly in December.

Sluggish... \

I am avoiding bulk directory links and don't want to waste money on buying tons of potentially harmful links.

Ideas, tips, experience?

  • Tiered linking structures (Link Pyramids, Linkwheels, etc), are very effective backlink building strategies for 2013. Also, remember to use anchor text variation, and combine some generic keywords (eg: click here, visit this site, etc..) to make your backlink profile look more natural to Google.

It sounds like your expecting too much too fast. Traffic rises exponentially online, it isn't a straight input=output equation.

Plus I would say getting to 500 visits a month on the type of link building you've been doing is pretty good (depends on the volume though).

The most effective form of link building for 2013 is building quality content then conducting outreach to authority sources asking them to share or cite it! It's a very slow burner, but when it works it REALLY WORKS!

Definitely +1 on this! And yes, the traffic curve is definitely exponential as you increase in the rankings. I watched one of my sites triple in traffic after moving from position 3 to position 2 for its primary keyword.

Petemcal: I know it's not increasing suddenly. Have been marketing online for over 10 years.

But it has gotten a lot harder since 2011.

    What else do you recommend?

I assumed you were new to online marketing seen as how you asked for those who have experience

Anyway the essence of what you should take from this is that link building tactics such as blog commenting, forum posting and niche directory linking should be used to "top up" your main body of links not be your primary link building tactic.

As you said yourself it's gotten a lot harder since 2011, there are no real SEO shortcuts. If you want quick sustainable traffic you're going to have to pay for it.

Blog commenting: too many "nofollow" links (too bad)...

Guest posting: been putting a lot more energy into this and seems to have some influence even in 1-2 weeks time!

Anything else you'd like to add?

All of these I know myself, but it's still sooooo slow...

You need the right SEO mindset when dealing with SEO. View everything long term and you'll be a better SEO. One of our sites took us 10 months to get top 3 rankings (at #2 now) but if I didn't have the right mindset this wouldn't have happened. Please bear in mind you will still need the resources to do it.

According to me 'Backlink Relevancy' has become more important these days (specially after Penguin and recent 17th Jan algorithm update). As a consequence 'dofollow', 'nofollow', 'PR' - these factors have become less important. They are still important but a PR8 backlink which has zero relevance to your website will not work (actually it can work negatively as Google will suspect that as 'Paid link').

Variation is backlink pattern will work as it will look more natural.
