I know that Google always says that quality content will get you ranked, but I have found that is not true. I have 10 times more quality content on my website than any of my competitors & with every Google update, my rankings drop. The latest update just a few days ago brought me to #14 in Google.com. Before Penguin & Panda I was enjoying #1 & #2 spots in Google.

What do you do when having the best content is not enough?

There's a difference between quality content for traffic & quality content for SEO (two different things). For on-page SEO, quality is about not stuffing keywords, the location of the keywords on the page, the location of relevant keywords, & internal links pointing at relevant pages.

Quality content for traffic is self explanatory.

It's in Google's best interest to tout the "content is king" approach to getting a site ranked. As you've experienced, quality content is not enough. There are so many different factors that Google considers, only a few that are truly impacted by your content being of high quality.

Of course, we want high quality content that can convert visitors to our site. But there are additional on page and off page techniques (all of which have been talked about in WF) that you need to employ to get long term top rankins.
