SITEMAP ISSUE - indexed pages vs. actual. Any fixes for Joomla site??

Hi,

I have just been reading the Google Best Practices guide and thought I would check out the issue of
1) Check the number of indexed pages in Google vs. the number of
pages you actually have.

I had a xml site map generator for my site but ONLY 2 out of the 161 submitted pages are indexed. The site is about 2 years old and I am adding relevant original content of sufficient word size. i originally had a standard site map html, but found out that google doesn't accept this format.

I am having difficulty in finding a replacement xml (sitemap) file generator (either plugins don't load or there are other issues) such is the case for joomla 1.5 at the moment.

Has anyone come across a similar issue, do you think it matters, how does it matter, and how did you fix it?

I think that the articles I have written are still being searched and found on Google, but maybe the discrepancy is an 'admin issue' and its downgrading my sites PR etc?

Anyone?

    Hi Bruce,

Yes it matters. It would help if you can rewrite the whole thing as using automation tools does have its flaws.

Is this for Dog Walkers, dog walking, Pet Sitting: Melbourne Williamstown Newport Altona North Spotswood I can't seem to view your "Latest News Articles". Coming soon?

Hi Epic ... I have limited programming skills and I thought just generating an xml file would be a simple task. The fact that the file says it has found 160 pages was encouraging. And it is actually both the dog walking and dog treats sites in my signature that have the same problem.

In fact a few months back google said it indexed ten pages, but now it is at TWO PAGES. Yes google analytics suggests that about ten pages were accessed over the last month, suggesting that Google found them, but I would still like webmaster tools to find almost all of the sites pages.

I currently use XMAPS xml sitemap generator, but happy to try any other one that people have found works on a j 1.5 site.

The "Latest News Articles" heading you refer to used to have a red box under it with an article title linked to my latest article, but that was all manual and took up too much time. SO I just left the unlinked heading thinking that I would fix it at some stage, but obviously have not.

As in wordpress, there is probably a plugin for joomla that shows the last five articles or the most popular ones - would be better if i automated that.

You should not have any problem using e.g. A1 Sitemap Generator or similar online services / desktop tools.

There's a Joomla scan preset in A1SG as well. However, the preset is set to scan rather slowly since many (but not all of) Joomla sites use a throttling/anti-flood plugin that bans crawlers making too many requests too fast. If you are trying out alternatives and encounter this problem with A1SG or a competing product, this help page may be of benefit to you:

Sitemap Generator and Joomla CMS Website Sitemaps

    ...

Concerning your indexed number being very low. Can you find your own pages if searching for page titles? the "indexed number" in Google Webmaster tools is sometimes quite a bit behind. (I personally believe it actually represents the number of URLs in submitted sitemap verified to be in Google search index. Usually these two numbers ought to be close to the same of course, in reality however...)

If problem persist. Is your site under some kind of Panda/Penguin/EMD filter or penalties?
If not, do you have some quality (non-spammy) link juice to your site?
