I linked from the links page of one older website I own to a new one I just started and now, as well as ranking on page 1 for its own keywords, the new site is also ranking in the no. 1 position for the primary keyword of the older site, displacing it down to number 2!

This may just be temporary. New websites often get a temporary rankings boost before they get pushed down into the Google Sandbox. Keep up the link building and you should have a better chance of retaining those rankings.

Hi Thomas,

New pages often get a temporary boost in rankings (QDF Freshness factor). It will where off shortly and your old page will be back on top.
