Sudden Drop of Keyword Ranking After Changing the Content

Hey guys,

I had a site whose keywords were in top 10 but suddenly they have reached to 250 and above. And from past three days the ranking is continuously dropping. The strange thing is I haven't done anything different to the back linking efforts. Only the thing is that I have changed is the content of site keeping in mind not to do the stuffing of the keywords. And content was changed a month ago. Is this due to Content? Will the position be gained again?

Please Suggest
Thanks

Did you delete all the content that was ranking and then replaced it with new content? Or did you add new content in conjunction with the content that's already there?

Maybe you were affected by the latest algo update!

Did this happened these last days?

I have been adding new content to home pages on several of my sites with the content that's already there I mean unique content and by far never had any problem with it, I could be only 2 reason why your site drop the ranking : You delete all old content on home page and replace new content OR most likely affected by the latest algo update...

On page SEO is more important than anything else. You can have all the links in the world but if your on page SEO isn't great, your rankings will suffer. Could be an algorithm change. Could be (maybe even likely) that the changes you made to the home page negatively impacted rankings. If I have a site ranking on the first page I'd be very careful about changing anything.

Same thing happened to me, its google's algo.

I don't know wtf is going on, my site was ranking top 10 for all year, survived many updates and only has unique handwritten content and i have a ton of real users and facebook shares/likes.

I don't know wtf google wants but now the top 10 is a mess, with unrelated crap showing up and youtube videos, and weird galleries. Most sites are all non-unique scraped content sites and violate many of the so called BS google says.

Content update could be a reason for a drop, but NOT so many pages... You just have to be sure that the new content is already indexed in google (do NOT ping your website! You could use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to help your website be visited by Google Bot). If the pages are already indexed, you just have to wait for Google dance effect, you can't do anything...

    New update
The new thing now is that I have got back the lost backlinks but the ranking is continuously dropping. Some of them told that my site was hit by the update that occurred on the 22nd of Jan 13. So they suggested me to remove all the directory and social bookmarking links. For removing these links they suggested the Google disavow link tool. So my question is that should I use this tool and filtered the low quality backlinks coming from these sites and then upload them by using the tool. Will it really help?

    Thanks

You need to check your anlytics, if traffic was down from 15th jan then its because of the update launched on 17th by Google.

Sounds from your first message that you made a change to better comply with "best practice" (adjusted your keyword balance) and rankings went down! I sometimes wonder if the Google algo is actually as twitchy and smart as people make out. Sure it has got a lot better in the last few years at understanding on page content, but webmasters seem to dance around like a cat on a hot tin roof because of warnings about this or that algo change, when in most cases just doing the basics right is enough to get and sustain rankings.

The lesson here might be to do as you have - make changes, measure, with a view to rolling back any change that proves (or appears) detrimental.

Make it same to same as it was and provide some real quality backlinks and wait for results. If result won't come in your favor then study about new algo of Google's SEO.

Buy High PR links. This is really the only solution to ranking over the long term. Position fluctuates all the time without solid links.

If you didn't overstuff the content with kws, your rankings shouldn't have been affected by the content.

If it dropped Jan 17-24 it was because of the Penguin update. Killed me as well.
