I don't know about the rest of you, but I am getting quite frustrated with the recent Google updates. I provide my visitors with high quality content & much more of it than my competitors. The results from the updates have brought my site from #1 & 2 in Google to #19.

Let's put our heads together & figure out other sources of traffic beyond the obvious social media & guest forum & blog postings.

What methods have worked for you?

Pinterest and social bookmarking sites can bring decent traffic if you know how to use them.

List mailing traffic. Purchase a solo ad in someone's subscriber newsletter or email list. You can get quite targeted nongoogle traffic if you find the right guy in your niche.

If you dont know where to find a guy like this, you can go to an ad swap broker like safe-swaps.com

Yahoo as many programs, if you can increase your activity with Yahoo such as Yahoo Answer, Yahoo Group, Yahoo Directory, Yahoo Search Engine and other programs of Yahoo, it would give you targeted traffic too!

Google can be a pain, you can always focus on Bing and Yahoo, Social traffic and online advertising.

All those methods can bring in some amazing results if done correctly.

My issue is that my niche only has 6,600 global exact match searches per month. That was great when I had #1 & 2 in Google, but is limited when going for alternate traffic sources.

You could try putting up a very targeted Yahoo answers question, and answer it with another account, then start building links to that page. It might be easier to rank the Yahoo answers page (which of course links to your site) than the website itself.

Why do people act like they can't have multiple traffic sources? The SERPs are a single traffic source, you can still SEO while monetizing other traffic sources.

Although Google is apparently stressing on Content quality for webmasters, the people who relied on backlinks were able to survive the last update. And most of the webmasters who concentrated on creating quality content (no backlink) suffered a major blow.
Can you tell me why Google is giving false suggestions??

And because Google has become so much unreliable, it is better to target YouTube, FB, twitter, SU etc to get decent traffic to your website.

Although going social is an obvious piece of advice if you aim at getting non-Google traffic - Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest are indeed very and very good traffic sources. You may promote your site via social platforms and increase popularity of your brand or services this way. By doing this you encourage potential customers to type in the exact name of your brand into their browsers, which is a decent alternative to finding your site in Google search results.
In terms of advertisement, Classified Ads (Craiglist and eBay) turned out to be an additional traffic source for some of my projects, but it largely depends on a specific niche. If you’re doing PPC for your site, then there are numerous alternatives to Google’s AdWords, such as AdBrite, Clicksor, AdToll, TargetPoint..
This is also a way to go if you share interesting and helpful info on Web 2.0 sites: Squidoo, HubPages, Posterous, Tumblr, Blogspot, Wetpaint, Wikispaces, Skyrock, Weebly etc. and receive your loads of traffic from them. You may also want to focus on your existing loyal visitors: send out newsletters, provide valuable e-mail updates or add RSS subscription button.

My top 4 traffic sources are:
FB, squidoo, twitter, google search, all in that order.

Yes, I have come up with my own plan on FB, and
you might think squidoo is found in google so that should not
count as being away from google. Let's just say I use squidoo
in a way that more than 50% of the traffic from squidoo comes
from what I'm doing, not serps.

FB, squidoo, twitter are laser targeted. SERPS are a crap shoot.

I'm guessing here that you might want to update that list?

My website has huge presence on Google (in top 10 for most competitive keywords) but does not enjoy similar rankings on Bing. Not sure why.
