So I keep reading that when picking up a niche for your website you should target keywords that get at least 1000 local monthly searches. Why is that?

Reason I am asking this is because I am from a non english speaking country but I want to target global audience. So the keywords I want to pick get good amount of global but almost zero local monthly searches. IS this going to affect my page rankings?

Also can someone explain why someone from lets say USA would benefit from local monthly searches if the keywords they target are in english language?

Generally this is a mistake on the behaf of the product creator... Most products tend to aim at people who are from the states and this is where the majority of money is being made at. Just look at how most ebooks are written, they are written in the American form of English, opposed to the normal form of English.

You will want to target the search results that are in America/Uk/Australlia. There are many tools which do this, including google keyword tool, you can set it to specific regions, I recommend that you do that.

In Google keyword tool it is under "advanced options and filters".

Edit: Being in a foreign country shouldn't affects your positioning (Unless you are a local business trying to get local search terms) and the last question is kind of obvious. Ofcourse someone in the USA would benefit from an english term because that is their language.
