With a garbage answer like that, what kind of sorry tech support do you
      offer?

Meta tags are 1997 and are hardly used for anything, let alone SEO.
Okay, some technical ones may be useful, at times, but not for SEO.

Thanks Paul, I won't worry about Meta Tags then and just focus on having the keyword and correct density in the posts and titles etc.

Meta Tags are really important if you wanna see your website in Google. They are the Heart of every website.

Second most important? Man what are you smoking?
Google may or may not use it. It's abused like everything else.

So, you don't care if google ignores your second most important
element on a page? I most assuredly do. But it aint meta
      description.

    It depends which meta tag.

The keywords tag tends to be ignored by all the major search engines.

But description is usually used and when that's the case it is the text that appears in the search results below the clickable title. In my view, it's probably the second most important element on the page (title being the first).

Other tags can be useful - no index, no follow both have their place.

And if you're lucky enough to be indexed by Yahoo or Dmoz (Open Directory) then tags can be used to tell the search engines not to use the - normally boring - description from those directories.

I don't get the option if Google decides to over-ride the meta description (or the title for that matter) but the reason I said title and description are the two most important tags as far as I'm concerned is that those are the elements of the page people get to see before they even get to my site.

You could have the best SEO in the world and come up on page one of the results but if your title says (for example) "Home Page" and the description (again for example) says "My home page" then the average surfer wouldn't click.

While meta tags might not be as important as they were a few years ago, I believe they are still among the factors that Google includes in its algorithm. How much weight is assigned to meta tags is certainly debatable, but to say they have zero value is most likely not accurate.

I would definitely use the title and description meta tags. If for no other reason than, as trevor92 said, they are viewed by people looking at the search results and they might influence someone to click your site versus someone else's.

I'm feeling like I should play Mr Pedant today.

There are an unlimited number of meta tags you can use.

However, for most sites, the only two that are usually defined are meta description and meta keywords (note that meta titles are ancient and not recognized by most search engines).

For SEO purposes, the only meta tag that is useful is the meta description. It won't help your rankings, but can improve your CTR (so long a Google uses it and not it's own extract)

Page title is all I would really use, doesnt matter actually as search engines like google will decide itself what is best to use to rank your site/pages.

Google recommends itemprop meta tags more than the standard meta tags.
You can generate the itemprop meta from here the link below:
    https://developers.google.com/+/plugins/snippet/
secondly if you want to use the standard meta then don't use the keywords meta tag because after the penguin update it can cause an over optimization penalty.
