With what pace should I build links?

I just opened opened my site in 12th November, and got my fist links indexed on 1st of December. Since last month my ranking kinda improved.

Just want to rank #1 for a single relatively low-competition keyword. About how many links would you advice to build per month? I mean the # of referring domains and links per domain.

Please just give some rough estimate, so I just wouldn't want hurt myself by overdoing it.
Much appreciate any advice.

Build Social Signals (Twitter) - Social Bookmarks (200-300) & A few Blog Posts each month.

    That will do!

I most certainly would not waste my time building 200-300 social
      bookmarks.

Build as many quality links that YOU can. There is no limit.
There's no limit to the number of links per domain either. Not
sure where you got that from.

You can never overdo it building links. I'm not sure why that myth
is like the energizer bunny. It just keeps going and going...

Thank Paul, I would really want to believe if it's true.
But I thought, the "unnatural link building activity" meant just that - overdoing.

That has nothing to do with link numbers. It has to do with shitty backlinks.

I agree with you that there is no limit of building backlinks and a person can keep building backlinks for his site. But what if a Health niche site is building backlinks at some IM sites? Doesn't it look unnatural ?
Please take it as a question. Not trying to critique you.

There is no such thing, in this regard, as unnatural. Fast and furious
link building SHOULD have nothing to to do wit unnatural.

Think about it. You should strive to have people want to link to you
and go viral. If that were bad, or any other such nonsense about
"constant" link building then listen everyone:

Put a BIG BOLD sentence at the top of your page: PLEASE do
not link to me unless you contact me. I am keeping track. I do
not want to be penalized by google because some you are linking
          to me! Now stop it!

Sound silly? Of course it is.

People just mix and match quotes from google and some SEO
guru, and it comes out BS.

Some people act like a bot. They spam this, spam that, complete
          BS, complete nonsense.

Said person is worse than a bot.

Anyone who keeps track of the number of links they get, to keep
score, and steady, is insane. If I build 50 links, I hope others build
me 100. I aint keeping track.

You can't control the number of links google sees or counts, nor
can you keep track of those who link to you. Complete insanity.

You know what, I remember some time back Paulgl suggesting you were a robot in your replies, and i'm now considering this as a genuine possibility.
First of all, Paul never said to be consistent with your backlinks, you misquoted him on that, in fact he has repeatedly stated the opposite in other threads! He merely said there is no limit to the volume of links built over time, nothing to do with consistency of link building.

Secondly, did you deliberately ignore Mike Friedman's post above that consistency with link building is a myth or do you just disagree?

I think the answer is more link spam i'm afraid, and please click my sig

I am not really sure about the social signals. Would you please like to explain a bit about it?

That's a horrible idea. Real sites do not get a consistent amount of backlinks.

There's no limit to building links as far as your links are relevant and niche related. Also go for manual submission to get links on proper quality sites.

It's literally impossible to manually build backlinks too fast.

Agreed. Also, if you do quality, white hat stuff, you'll be fine

Guest post on high PR and high Alexa ranked sites, then you will get more link juice, more power and some traffic. Don't listen to the people who tell you to get as many links as you can, go for quality, you can get 5,000 links from sites with no authority, traffic or pagerank and in return you may get nothing. Go for quality, 5 high PR links can power you more than thousands of crappy links!

Keep it simple and looking natural.
