Basically, why a site with the below link profile from opensiteexplorer rank higher.

This is the profile of website from opensiteexplorer (free version)

Domain Authority: 24
Page Authoriy of Homepage:33

Page authority of internal page:11

External Linking Domain: 15

Website Age: 6 years

Page Rank: 0

Is opensiteexplorer not accurate?

Just because you don't see backlinks doesn't mean a page doesn't have backlinks. Your looking at a 3rd party database (OE), that's not the entire backlinks on the web.

No one can actually provide you with the exact links that Google is indexing since services like SEOmoz and Majestic generate their own separate link map or index of the web. Also, Google uses factors other than just links to determine keyword ranking including content and social mentions that are not as easily determined by 3rd party services.

    Agree with the previous post.
Make a quick audit of the competitor and you will discover some reasons why the website ranks better. Links are important, but it is entirely possible to hit the top without a 'proper' link profile, although it always helps.

There just could be two reasons:

    1. Not all back links are visible.
    2. Quality high pr links.. If you have the funds and invest in this type of SEO, your back link profile will be clean and less messy. You don't need thousands of low quality links to rank or get penalized.

I don't agree on above . As i know , our competitors are rank well on our keyword niche. The reason is they don't do any seo or promote products on internet. On the other hand , we write many useful articles and do white seo , build backlinks. Now we hit by google penguin. It seems more efforts on some pages , google will ignore it or penalise it. This makes me think no more backlinks . putting more efforts on writing useful information.

There are so many factors other than backlinks that Google uses to rank a website.

And yet, people still swear that the more backlinks equals a winner...

In addition to what's said above, not all backlinks are equal.

Then number of back links doesn't matter, the value of the back link matters.

It is possible that you are not getting all the backlinks with the opensiteexplorer. The quality of the backlinks matters. You can have 1000s of low quality backlinks that will do very little or even get you penalized however, on th flip side you could have a couple from major high authority sites that fire you up the SERPs.

There may be many reasons that a site can rank without backlinks, one is the keyword in the domain factor which makes them rank high, second is the authority back linking and third is that back links profile is not visible.
