Influencing Google page 1 results

Hey,
I don't remember reading anything regarding this particular issue before - but short of having an extra 9 top-ranking sites for a particular search term, is there anything else one could do to influence what G displays on page 1?

Here's the situation:
I work for a company that ranks 1st for its particular search term and probably a few closely related ones. The problem is, we've recently had an incident (marring an otherwise spotless safety record) that got some media coverage and some unwanted attention, and now Google is both displaying those news articles and suggesting other search terms including the words 'accident', 'death' and such when you write our name.

Does anyone know an effective method of damage control for something like this?

    I would look to an Internet reputation management firm.

    There are ways of purging unfavourable results from Google but you probnably have to know what you are doing.

    I have no idea what the techniques are, but I have seen ads and web pages offering these services.

    For the Google Suggest, I'm not sure what you can do about those.

    The usual way is to dominate the most crucial results by creating new content and new links, using web2.0 properties, press releases, images and videos to get as much of the first page covered with the good messaging.

    First thing that springs to mind would be to rank for the keyword suggestions that popup and get to the user before the other articles do, and give them your version of events first. I don't know how this stands from an ethical perspective though.
