I guess many people have observed that ranking positions of the keywords are changing on daily basis, whereas earlier we used have the ranking positions stable atleast for couple of weeks, any thoughts on this activity of Google.

    Yes - it's normal.

It doesn't really matter and it's a good thing because you know if your rankings are wandering up and down in the rankings then you need to do more promotion until they stick.

Some people seem to think getting your website ranked is a one-time thing where you do the promotion and then forget about it.

That's obviously not the case and with Google's focus on new and changing content it's only likely to get more important to keep your promotions constantly running in order to keep your relevance and content fresh.

I've got a website sitting at #1 and in the past 6 months I have not touched it

Yep me too. I have some that I haven't touched for years that are nailed to the top spot.

As with all things - past performance is no guarantee of future behaviour.

In a competitive niche you can disappear from the first page in a matter of hours if your competition are constantly building content and links and you're not. In a not so competitive niche you can often get to the top and sit there with little to no effort.

But that doesn't mean that will continue - so it's just common sense to keep an eye on things, understand your niche and your competitors and know how to stay on top of the situation and how to respond if things change.

There will always be exceptions to any rules you try to create around seo - there are still poor spammy sites showing up well for some searches, that's obviously not what Google want so it's just a matter of time before they change their algo in a way that cleans out the crap, but while they're doing that there are desperate spammers trying to find other ways to fill the results with crap in new ways - so it's destined to keep changing.

I just check the rankings once a week. The rankings will go up and down daily and it's not much a big deal.

In my experience, newer sites will dance around more, older sites will usually stay put.

Depends on the keyword though, remember, your competition is building keywords too!

Because others are doing their best to get to the top as well? SERPs are not static. However after Google Penguin update I am also facing the same problem. I feel it is because of Google's change in rules as well as backlinks which is getting cached randomly making the linked websites move back and forth.
