What kind of software do people like to use for keyword research? I'm considering Market Samurai and I like what i see in the free trial so far. I have no experience with any alternatives. What do people think about this software? Are there better options?

  • Here are some free alternatives that you can take a look at - Basic Keyword Tools. Don't forget that every keyword tool that utilizes Google to generate results is going to return similar results, some tools have more bells and whistles. Take a look at Traffic Travis as well.

Before I used google suggestion tool but as I really need to speed up proces and get best result I start to use KE 2.0 (Keyword Elite) and market Samurai. Both paid version and I can say it give me great result.
But don't think if you own this 2 software that you will be on the top. Every software need someone to guide him, to explore him and I always remember Pirelli publicity:"The power is nothing without control"

Ultimate niche finder and long tail pro are best alternatives. SEO powersuit in combination with UNF is working great for me

I've used Market Samurai, but it is painfully slow. It's an excellent piece of software that does a lot. They have tons of features like locating linking opportunities and they give you excellent analytics on the competition page.

I have switched to Long Tail Pro, which is much faster, but it also lacks in many of the features that Market Samurai has.

Tons of people on here just use the Google Keyword tool and something like SEO quake, which is OK, but that method is pretty slow too. You can speed it up by having multiple windows open, but then the process gets a bit cumbersome.

I like using premium tools because they pull the data in faster than I can, and allow me to filter faster. Long Tail Pro lets you put in multiple seed keywords which is amazing!

You can certainly get by with free tools out there, but I would suggest at least using a spreadsheet program to automate some of the filtering.

To me, the tools like Market Samurai and Long Tail Pro are so cheap (fixed costs!) that they pay for themselves in one day just by saving me time. I bought Long Tail Pro for like $32 or $37 and I bought Market Samurai for about $47 (I think). Those are ridiculously low prices when you consider they are fixed costs.

I still use SEOQuake, but that's more or less for when I'm doing REAL searches, it allows me to see potentially weak keywords to make note of as I'm trying to find information.

Until now, I think google keyword tool still the best (cause it's free).
For paid tool, you could take a look at keyword scout. It has many great features.

If you find the free trial of MS to be suitable and the speed doesn't concern you, then go for it. MS is very popular.

If you want to go down the cheap, ie: free, then GAKT combined with seoquake and/or seo spyglass.

Market Samurai is an overpriced, over-hyped POS.

      Do not waste your money.

Google's Keyword Tool combined with a good backlink checker is about all you need.

Google Keyword Tool and Market Samurai worked the best for me. They are not the same, so they add up.
Google is good to search some keywords with the function and MS is very good to analyze the competition.

    Hope that helped

Market sumarai is a waste of your money.

I will rather use the free Google Keyword Tool, Traffic Travis
    combined with common sense.

It won't take you long once you master the act besides,
it's worth it if you don't want to build castles in the air.

If you're someone that does a ton of keyword research I recommend you go for Market Samurai just because of how much time it saves. Remember that you can get a free trial version of Market Samurai that gives you access to all of the software's features.

Or you can go the traditional way and use Google's keyword tool and the other free software tools available.

I actually disagree with MS saving time. It .... is .... so .... SLOW.

I can do things MUCH faster with the Google KWT, Traffic Travis, and Calc to sort the data:

I use Market Samurai and have been for several years. I like it. It pulls from the same place lots of others do (Google).

But its not what MS does it your analysis of what MS does that matters. You can get any analytics, keyword research, marketing tool out there that does x,y and z - but it doesn't DO the work for you. The most underused aspect of these tools is that after these tools do their work the people using them don't use their brain.

Bottom line there are tons of tools available that give great data but without your ability to assess the data they aren't worth squat. The real challenge is assessment - not pushing a button.

I use Market Samurai and I like it. Like other posters have said, it is slow, but you don't have to mess around with proxies like you do with some other tools and they update the software regularly.

Also, like @intergen said, it's what you do with the data that matters. MS gives you a ton of useful keyword info and even filters the data. However, it's your analysis of the data and how you use it that ultimately determines your success at choosing and ranking with a particular keyword (same goes for the other keyword tools out there too). For instance, I export MS data into excel sort/filter from there to find my keywords.

If you do a lot of keyword research or are seriously pursuing IM as more than just a hobby, Market Samurai is a useful purchase.
