If I master google places & youtube... then do I even need SEO?

This is something I've been asking myself everyday as I build backlinks to my keywords and wonder, "why am I doing this".

Although I have various keywords on page 2 now, some of my more competitive keywords still have a long way to go.

And this makes me really question WHY I am so obsessed with ranking my website. I've already ranked another site on page 1, position 3, for a 800 search a month keyword, it was damn hard, and not even worth it tbo. That ranking gets us around 4-5 calls a month, it converts to maybe 1-2 sold jobs, and we make a few grand.

But I had to work on that keyword for months and months and its somewhat assinine just to think about.

What I noticed is this:

1) Some of my youtube videos that are on page 1, are competing with websites that have dropped thousands to get where they are. Along with many months spent building backlinks. But my mistake was targeting competitive terms, so most my videos stay towards the bottom of page 1. Even so, they still get more traffic (for the time/money spent) then the 1 keyword I have ranked in position 3 for a similar competition keyword.

2) Google places. I never got involved with it till recently, but I'm noticing not only does google places get traffic quicker, and more of it, but so do many other local directories. Which again makes me question why 90% of my focus is on ranking my site.

So I'm thinking about changing up my strategy.

Afterall, I don't really care where my website ranks, all I care about is traffic/leads.

I've also witnessed someone who is targeting long tail keywords with YT the >>right way<< by targeting hundreds of them, and they have built a profitable business by doing this.

So this is my question. My niche is not what I'd call "popular". But the ROI is massive in it. Its basement waterproofing and mold remediation.

What I'm thinking about doing is this -

1) Stop doing SEO for my site, or focus on SEO 10% of the time, instead of 90%.

2) Increase my focus on youtube and google places. Focus more on getting tons of citations and reviews from my customers on AS MANY different local directories as possible.

3) For youtube, scale up what I'm doing now X 100. Since it works on a small scale, and fast, it only makes sense to focus more on youtube than ranking my site... no?

To make good money for myself (good money I consider $10,000-$15,000/month) all I need to get is about 15-20 calls a month. Or 5-7 sold jobs a month minimum. I'm fairly good on the phone, and sales tends to be my strongest skill.

I'm honestly not sure why I took my focus off youtube when it was producing results. I think this forum distracted me tbo. At one point I was doing my own thing, I was highly focused, and my income was growing every month.

Then I got the SEO bug, and now my incomes has froze.

Its something I really have to be honest about.

What do you guys think about this?

Can I build an entire sales funnel just focusing on youtube and google places/local directories? I have evidence everywhere that tells me it can be done. But then that makes me curious... why do YOU guys focus so much on SEO and ranking sites? Considering that most my money comes from my local business, and a smaller amount by marketing other local businesses.. which again, I do with youtube... am I a minority here?

I realize I'm asking A LOT of questions, but I'm just curious what some of the vets think about all of this. I will never provide SEO services to help rank other sites. My main interest has always been offline businesses, and getting leads as quickly as possible.

I've done PPC before, and it works, but its not sustainable long term and the ROI was crap. I need some type of foundation, that produces leads more consistently, but I think ranking my site is a bad idea for this. Plus I always hear people saying "you can't build a business on SEO".. and thats been screwing with my head.

What do you guys think?

Thanks! - Red

For you SEO is on the reserve list. A video on the first page would be well backed up were the page it linked to also there.

Whatever else, your traffic is the final arbiter. You're making good money. Just make sure that your traffic sources are diverse enough to be able to withstand any changes in algorithm.

Backlinks in my book only have value when they bring you good quality traffic.

Your youtube videos do not really compete against websites.
You are competing against others on youtube, and people
searching on youtube. The vast majority of video searches
      are done on youtube.

As far as google places, you don't need a website for that
anyway. SEO is a misnomer if anyone is talking about
google places. It's not a search engine giving results.

Even when they're ranked on page 1 of google?

We ask everyone who calls us, how they found our business, and many will say "we saw your youtube video on google".

For instance, if you search "mold remediation contractor nj", 1 of our videos shows in position 3 of google.

If you search "mold removal nj", 2 of our videos show on the bottom of page 1.

Even though though that last keyword only gets 400 exact searches a month, its still very competitive. It took me virtually no time to rank those videos, and I've been building backlinks to my site for 3 months now, and am still on page 6 of google.

So I thought instead of broad keywords, I'll target service + town/county keywords. Traffic will be far less, but I'll be able to rank above google places for most long tail searches (using youtube instead of my site).

Like if you type in "tree service brandon florida", thats another guy from WF ranking above google places using youtube. So I want to do the same thing for my niche. To me, that definitely seems like I'm competing against websites.

I 100% agree that "video searches" are done on youtube. But I'm talking about google searches here. The same way a website geotargets towns & services, using lots of pages on their website, I'd be doing the same thing but with youtube, since videos rank quicker.

Like "mold remediation monmouth county nj". It would take me virtually no time to rank in the top 5 of google for that keyword. Using youtube. However, if I use my site instead, it will be 10xs harder to do. Youtube has more authority, videos don't get penalized for backlinks (none of my videos have been removed for using scrapebox) so as long as I target long tail keywords, I can rank for A LOT of keywords on the top of page 1, above google places.

So people say. The problem is, I don't see many google place pages ranking, that aren't connected to websites. In fact, I've never seen 1 in either one of my niches.

        Regardless, that doesn't even matter.

My point is that it should be easier to rank lots of long tail geotargeted keywords on page 1 of google, using youtube, then doing it for a website.

A fair amount of keywords I have ranking, don't even have backlinks and are on page 1 of google. Then I go to a site underneath me to find they have hundreds of quality/relevant backlinks.

So thats basically my point. As far as getting fast results, youtube seems like a much smarter idea than geotargeting hundreds of pages on my website, then slowly getting backlinks for each page. I've already geotargeted about 50 towns in my state, using seperate pages on my site, and none of the pages rank past page 2 yet. I don't have enough links. But with youtube, the videos rank a lot faster, and because you have a thumbnail, it attracts traffic better.

Thats why I think for the next few months, I shouldn't focus so hard on ranking my site. But using youtube/google places/yelp/yellow pages and other local directories.

Its either that or I keep building backlinks to my site for a dozen keywords, while waiting the next 3-6 months for traffic to start coming in. For the long term, SEO definitely seems ideal, but for the shortterm, I think I need to ignore it.

I'm re-opening my auto detailing business and plan to dominate the rankings with just Youtube and Google Local. Have you been making supporting channels for your main videos and linking to them and doing video replies?
