I have never really thought about including them in my seo strategy but can someone explain to me how a little infographic can help seo?

Link bait = traffic = spreading link bait.

An infographic is basically link bait, which is web content that was created to attract attention and is interesting enough for people to pass on. A big part of SEO is building the number of inbound links that point to your website or webpage. Since infographics display information in a pretty package so that people can quickly grasp a concept, they will, in theory, result in lots of inbound links back to your website as more and more people share it.

As Yukon says, it's about traffic.

If your infographics are interesting to your traffic then they will want to know more. The days of blindly linking to everything including your mother's pussycat's website are long gone. That in reality they never were is another matter altogether.

After all, it's traffic that brings you your profits. Targeted traffic - giving you better conversions is even better. What's more, Google likes this too. You win, and Google helps you.

So target your infographics at the tickle spot of your audience.

The #1 problem I see with a lot of infographics is the author doesn't make it easy for traffic to share the infographic all over the web.

It's amazing that someone would put a lot of time/effort into an infographic project then let it get buried on their site. If traffic can't easily copy/paste the infographic on external web pages there's not much point in creating an infographic. The whole point of an infographic is to share info. which can generate backlinks.

I disagree with the above. According to our test experiments and the real time statistics, infographics are the most shared content which would help get backlinks naturally. Images are the most shared content in any social media site and is most syndicated in blogs.

You need to do it right for the infographics to go viral. If you just publish the infographic in your site without any sharing options and site idle, the marketing strategy would fail miserably like ant other marketing plan. Before publishing the infographic, make your publishing spot social ready. Include the share buttons to facebook, Google plus, pinterest etc along with an easy to grab embed code of the infographic. That's how it works.
