Niche was too broad - now need new smaller sites or just new categories???

I enthusiastically started trying to create niche sites a couple of years ago, but since the niches were too broad, I didn't make it to the front page of Google, and they hardly made any money. I was going with, "Do what you love!" without learning the basics first.

Anyway, now I'm a lot wiser and am using Market Samurai as well as just the good keyword tool Google gives us, and I'm finding long tail keywords that are sort of "sub-niches" of one I already have. So - should I create brand new sites for those - or should they merely be new categories of the niche site I have?

For example, if my original site was allaboutdogs and now I want to target natural dog food or dog food reviews or dog beds, should I create niche sites for each of those, or would they do better to be categories of one authority site - which is the too-broad site about dogs?

Thanks for all suggestions!

I would definitely go with making new categories on your existing site rather than building smaller/thinner sites. There's no worthwhile reason to make individual sites for each section, and the benefits of having one large site is plentiful. Also note that there's a difference between building a large site covering a lot of topics and building an authority site. An authority site is branded incredibly well, so much so that you get a lot of return visitors, and searchers purposefully click on your page on google because they recognise your name.

Thank you ichl13! That makes good sense to me, and building one authority site certainly will be a lot easier, too. This way I can give the site everything I've got and try to make it really valuable to visitors.

I have been blogging for a while and I never made a niche site before, so I done some research and found a small niche. I done research on the keywords and domain, I found a keyword being searched over 5000 times monthly, I also got the exact match domain name too.
I got the domin 2 days ago, made 1 page with good on page seo and unique content of around 900 words. I then used attracta directory to get found by Google, my niche site got indexed today on the middle of page 4 in Google, the site is ranking on page 4 on bing and yahoo.

My next plan is to add one page to the site once every 2 weeks and my next job is to get a few related backlinks to the main site. From my competition research, I found that many of the site ranking high have not backlinks, PR or a good moz rank.

So i think this site could make a few amazon sale here and there or maybe adsense.

    We will see.

This is my first niche site, although I have been blogging for a while making some clickbank sales and gvo referrals.

    Enjoying this little project

Even I would suggest creating new categories on existing site rather than creating niche sites all over again. You can rank the categories for your keyword as your existing site is older and will take less time to rank, than a new site.

Thank you kaytav. Yes, Google kind of did us a favor lately - life really should be easier if we can focus on fewer number of sites and get them ranked for those keywords instead of needing to try to have the EMD. I've been noticing on Market Samurai that the top competition in most niches I find are pages from large sites that have a lot of backlinks to the domain - and the domain may not have the keywords in it at all.

    What about monetizing the site?

Many factors I would consider when building a website.

Yes, I'm mainly depending on SEO to drive traffic. So that's why I wondered if a site devoted to the smaller niche rather than the broader topic would do better SEO-wise. For the broader one I have Adsense and some affiliate links and ads. Have made a little on Amazon, that sort of thing.

Thanks JackSarlo - I've made every possible mistake the last few years, looking forward to learning and having better results!
