Best way to get a few very strong links (even hiring someone to do it)

I have a site and a somewhat related keyword in mind, this keyword gets good traffic (like 5000 searches/mo) but is easy to rank for.

I figure it I could get a few- or even 1 really strong link- it might rocket me to the top of google.

What do you guys think?
Do private blog networks still work well? If so I would be interested in getting 1/ a few very high power links from any providers here

Where do you rank now? Is it a new site?

Yes, private blog networks do still help you rank. The truly effective ones you have never heard of, because they are truly private

    Rebel24,

I would suggest creating relevant Web 2.0 blogs with unique content that link to your main website. Then have those blogs talked about with your social media accounts or build some social bookmarking links or relevant blog comments.

You may also want to try a Press Release which can generate additional traffic from the media outlets. My WSO is perfect for what you are asking for, check out the link in my signature

I agree with trafficmasters. Just take it slow. Even if you have some really high quality links, they will still be outweighed by the lack of content on a new website.

Yeah, you could "work" years to make the website rank 1st for a REALLY strong and competitive keyword. Guest blogging is a nice way to do this with related to your niche blogs. Link exchange is NOT very effective, because the backlink would look natural if there is an unique content before and after the link. Also forum posts are a good way to get some strong backlinks (but remember that you should pay attention to KEYWORDS!) -> No more than 30% to your main keyword... Other keywords and just normal anchors *(click here, visit site, etc.)
