Some Impartial SEO Advice Needed

Hi WF,

Hope your weekends have gone well. I'm writing here because I would like a bit of impartial advice regarding a website I am going to start to get ranking soon. I'd like this advice from someone who I'm unlikely to approach to buy a WSO so I'm hoping a few of you have 5-10 minutes to spare to help me out!

Here's the long story short: an eCommerce site I ran a while ago has next to no traffic and I'm looking to revive it. At one point it was ranked top 3 for my most important search term on Google UK, and these days (about 6mo later) I don't seem to be top 100 for any of the important search terms I seem to be ranking for.

I'd like to know:
  • if you think there's anything wrong or could use substantial improving on-site,
  • if you think there are some obvious "well, you didn't think of this!" search terms I am not planning on targeting,
  • why you think the site may currently be not ranking for much at all (on Google only), and
  • if you were in my shoes, how would you proceed?

I am not looking for anything super deep, just 5-minute first impressions would already be super-useful to me. Please PM me if you can assist and I'll pop over both the URL and the search terms I'm looking to target.

Thanks in advance to anyone who could take a bit of time out to help and/or educate!

All the best,
D

    Why isn't website ranking:
Well just to begin, you might not be ranking because your website has not been updated in months. You probably have not added fresh content or had anyone link to you in a while. Start by creating fresh backlinks (might want to purchase this step) to your website.

    Where to Find Keywords:
Go into Google and just type your current keywords in. Write down some ideas from Google Instant and try to expand the keywords you are currently going for. For example, 'Workout Tips for Men' to 'Workout Tips for Men Over 40'. I know this might vary for eCommerce so it might involve adding new products.

    What I would Do:
I would start by updating it daily and try to keep adding fresh content. I know I have not seen the website, but look at your competitors and rank them to your website. Think about various places you can increase your traffic from external sources.

I would say that you can look at what SEO you are using. One of the best SEO plugin that I am using get your pages with good keywords on the front page of the search engines.

I would suggest you to do social networking. Also do image sharing on sites like Pinterest, Clipboard, Flickr, etc. sites which will help you to pull some traffic to your site.

It is better to get more backlinks and keep the flow of quality backlinks. That will help you to get your rank back. Usually, these kind of Google dance is there for new sites.

Apart from that, to target your audience, how did you figure out keywords? Did you use any tools?
