SEO Strategy for a Newbie

Hello All,

I'm fairly new to this game, so I just wanted to verify somethings.
I started my website about 4 weeks ago and had two target keywords:
'Paul Tovey' and 'Music Video Productions'.

In the first week, I was ranked on the first few pages for my name, but i'm not even on the top 1000 pages for my second keyword. On investigation, my website has not even been indexed yet, i'm not sure why.

The strange thing is, my ranking for my name actually dropped by 2 pages within one day, I have no idea why though.

Here's what i've done so far:
I have a wordpress website and every sunday I write a new blog on a related topic.

Twice a week, I search for keywords I want to achieve on google, find the top dog and use opensiteexplorer on their website. I then look at their top quality links and see if I can make a link in around the same way. (I've seen some of the best website use some dirty backlink methods) but atleast I actually fill in the profile and use the website for what it's designed!

In addition to the two backlinks a week and the weekly blog update, I usually get one, maybe two, people like my entries. Most comments I get are spam, so I usually just ignore them, but I have allowed a few of them, not sure if this helps?

I do have atleast 30 strong backlinks. But when I do an opensiteexplorer, alexa or google websmaster tools check, it seems to think I have no backlinks atall. Is this because Google doesn't know about my website?

Is my strategy pretty poor or am I doing ok?
How can I improve it?

    Hi Paul!

Ok you should totally be able to rank easily for your name, but "music video productions" is a very competitive keyword phrase. I mean you are talking about going up against huge studios with lots and lots of cash. You might want to do some keyword research and find something with less competition. JMO

Next, if you are appearing anywhere in the Google search results that means your site has definitely been indexed.

You are going to need to build many, many more backlinks if you really want to be successful at this. Is this a hobby site? If not you also should think about upping your output of content at least at first. Is your site empty looking still?

There are plenty of threads here on Warrior Forum about how to build backlinks. Spend some time on here learning everything you can. Don't take anything at face value really do your homework!

Don't approve spam comments just to have comments, you are linking to spam comments by doing this. Even if the link is no follow did you know you still lose "link juice" as if it was a do-follow? The only difference is that the spam site won't get any benefit from your link but you are still losing on this, get it?

    HTH a little

Thanks for your reply! I figured it may be competitive but I figured I would atleast be on Page 10. I noticed that from Page 2, Rank 4, the website have no backlinks atall and looks like they haven't been used for years.

I'll do some research and let you know how it goes

Agree with this. A lot of the times they are only leaving that comment to drop their own website link. And a lot of the times these link to non-relevant sites to yours and you are also building another OBL (Outbound Link) on your page when the ideal is to get more IBL's (Inbound Links) than OBL's.

Find relevant blogs/forums/sites in YOUR niche and leave RELEVANT quality comments on them that will STICK for years. These are the most sought after best type of backlinks to build to your site that Google WILL reward you for having.

      Best!

      Mike.

Most definitely focus on a few broader keywords and keyword phrases - without a doubt trying to rank for Music Video Productions will be near impossible. Throw in a location for example and do "London Music Video Productions" for example and that we be much easier to rank for.

You must do your keyword research before taking the plunge into building backlinks to those pages or your site for your chosen list of keywords. Another good thing to do would b to analyse the backlinks of your competitors and see where they are getting their strong links from. Don't copy, try to emulate.
