OK so here is my problem. I have a a domain that is the exact match for the keyword we are optimising for, its old (1999) and on top of that its got a good website with lots of content. This time last year it was a 12 page website with 200 links. Now it is a 370 page website (70 pages a month getting added monthly as of this coming month) and has over 5,000 back links (total links not root). Last month we had over 1,380 back links that were all natural and came about just from our content (it went viral). We have some amazing links to our content from sires like National Geographic, Forbes, Discovery Chanel and just this month Wired.

Bottom line is we are not receiving ANY natural traffic for ANY NEW search terms, be that new content we a creating and/or the search term we are optimising for. Its like all the new links we are creating are just not getting counted.

Now the interesting bit. We did rank well for the keyword we were aiming to rank for, in fact we ranked on page one for 6 weeks and then on the 14th Sept we tanked and google pushed us all the way back to pretty much the end of the SERPS for that keyword. Since then the only organic traffic we have received is from old keywords we were ranking fore before we din and SEO. All the new work we are doing seems to have totally been discounted. Its 5 months now sins this happened. We have continued to put up good content and we have continued to get amazing organic and totally natural links, but still no ranking. We have a PR of 3 and a predicted PR of 5. We have no manual penalty etc.We are also getting loads of social signals from all the content we do.

Sort of hoping its a 6 month penalty for link velocity and after google sees we are still getting top links they will bounce us back.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks in advance for your help

Personally I have no idea, but I would like to know myself as I had something similar (but on a much smaller scale).

Then why are you worried about google traffic?!?!?!

    Makes no sense.

There's no penalty for link velocity....google could give a rip about
    link velocity...

I suggest you stop marketing sites....

You too, should stop taking clients for your "affordable seo."

Google traffic is a different sort of traffic to that from links to content. You cant compare the two

Why? Some constructive advice would work better here.

You have a really good point. I have a client's site that I ranked #6 for in a very competitive field. All his minor non competitive keywords are still #1. and a few competitive have fallen to page 2. But one keyword phrase left the SERPs completely. It is a 3 word phrase. the combination of these 3 keywords still stand in the 2 keyword varient. But they are not as highly searched as the 3 keyword phrase that left the SERPs. I have Google webmaster tools, and I have received no email for penalization. No clue! but I would love to know also why this has happened.

It may be that the anchor text you are targeting, is not looking natural to Google..

You may have built too many links with the same anchor text, this can also be a problem..

I would suggest you to cross check backlinks using google webmaster tools and remove the low quality backlinks to update it in disallow links option of the tool. Carry on offsite activities with only quality backlinks to get back keywords on top.

I would suggest you to stop building backlinks. It seems you got too many backlinks in little time.

If majority of the links you are getting are indeed organic as you say then the reason you are not ranking for keywords you want to rank for may weel be that people are not linking to you with those keywords but with all sort of generic terms.

If however you are not telling the full story and on contrary are heavily building backlinks calling them 'natural', then Google obviously disagrees with you about their 'naturality'

Also, make sure your pages are moderately optimised for your targeted keywords + no keyword stuffing + rich LSI context.
