Below are methods or call it techniques that i have experimented to get ranking for the keywords of the website:

1) Directory submission( only directory website having page rank more than 4)
2) Blog submission( Created unique content and url with keyword, after which posted in the blogspot)
3) Classified submission( submitted only limited classifieds having high page rank websites like craglist, olx, locanto and many more)
4) Press Release ( I have done this based on the new update of the website, this is also powerful)
5) Article Submission( Submitted the articles in limited website having high page rank like ezinearticles.com,articlebase.com.articlesnatch.co m,hotfrog.com.tmc.net,amazines.com)
6) Forum posting( Participated in non related forums and gave signature, my participation was more to ensure that profile weightage increases.)

That's basic SEO, and is being done since SEO started. It's nothing new and it's funny that your title says Techniques for Ranking in 2013.

But most important thing is we should use link diversity while building volume of links, unless Google may penalize the site for link spamming.

I personally believe that building completely relevant and informative contextual backlinks is the best way to rank a keyword and yes, you have to make the backlinks with proper anchor text variations and call to actions. There are many people believe web 2.0 doesn't work nowadays but if you can build quality web 2.0 blogs with high quality post then it can also give a strong boost to your keyword ranking.

Seems like a lot of people are saying that anchor text diversity seems to be the most important thing now.

And its something I definitely need to take more seriously. Earlier this week I built about 60 quality backlinks, 2 days in a row, all using the same anchor text which was simply my url. For some reason I thought it wouldn't matter because an url isn't exactly a keyword. And I heard you should have a lot of links like this in the form of your url.

The following day my site took its biggest drop ever in the SERPS. And it was consistently going up slowly everyday for a good 6 weeks. I had been variating between 15 different keywords, untill I realized I didn't have any backlinks with my main url in them, so I tried to overcompensate I guess.

Afterwards I panicked and removed all of the backlinks. Later that day, some of the keywords came back up a little bit, but they are still pretty low.

Its normal for my keywords to dance a little bit, but only a few pages at most. Most of the time they've been slowly moving up like I said. 9/15 of my keywords were between pages 2-3. After doing this, I now have all 15 keywords between pages 18-30. I've never seen so many different keywords drop at the same time like that.

Does anyone know how I should address this?
Do I just start rebuilding backlinks and alternating anchor text again? I was trying to balance my backlink profile and apparently killed my rank in the process. But my rankings were getting really stable right up untill I did this.

In all honestly, I don't think it was the anchor text of the links you were building that caused the drops. I have built 100 or so links in a day many times for clients, all using their URL as anchor text (directory links), and have never experienced a drop from it. Chances are, all your links wouldn't be picked up in a few days anyhow.

I know from your posts you are actively doing a lot of things for your site, so it would be really hard to identify what exactly caused you to drop.

If it was the links you were building, it was more likely the type of links versus the anchor text used.

Are you sure it was the links? Next day is really fast, guess it could be if the links got lightening indexed. God did you ping them? I would just start linking again. I could be crazy but I think it might have been the wrong call to delete them, unless they were bad links to begin with. That looks like "I made 60 unnatural links, then after I got penalized I deleted them, further confirming that they were artificial". In hindsight maybe diluting them down with some different anchor text links would have done the trick. I'm sorry that sucks.

Edit- Mike is too quick for me

I think you're rushing things. I don't know why folk think SEO is a quick backlink game. It's not really if you're going after decent keywords. You already admit you have over-reacted to "address the balance" of links to your main URL and then a knee-jerk reaction in removing them all. It's no wonder that your SERP is bouncing around. I think people generally just need to slow down and use quality over quantity when it comes to links. Part of this used to be called link velocity. It's still a velocity of sorts but it's not v squared = u squared + 2as . It's more about random ups and downs, peaks and troughs as you publish interesting content and manage some social ticks and a couple of links as you go along.

The method you mentioned for year 2013 is very similar to year 2010. We'd say use of technology is something that should be done in 2013. This technology can be use of Facebook Open Graph, Mod_pagespeed or structured data.

This year I'm focusing on responsiveness and site load time. It is important to keep your load time under 2.5 seconds on first load and under 1 second after css, images, and js has been cached. No one likes a slow site including google
