Why a page with no content is rank number 1 for competitive keyword

I have heard so many story after panda updates that content is the most important factor to rank a site.

But why this page whitepages.com/reverse_phone is rank number 1 for the keyword reverse phone lookup

There are many pages and sites that have high quality content with this keyword

      You know why it ranks top for that keyword? because no one cares about it and it only gets like 90 worldwide searches a month. I swear anyone could rank high for that keyword if they wanted. They are probably the only site trying, pointless tbh.

      Whoever would bribe Google to get page 1 for a term with 90 searches a month is probably like Mr Bean.

    Yeah, this is a funny one, and proof that the search engines can sometimes really screw things up, to put it politely.

    I have 3 websites that are EMD's for a pretty popular keyword that probably now gets around 20K exact searches per month, the actual product keyword that is very close to the EMD keyword gets around 100K per month exacts.

    Anyway, I have the .com, the .net, and the .org for this EMD. The .com is the only one that I've actually done quite a bit of work on, it's had good content including videos I made myself, etc, on there for 3 years or so, and has been well backlinked. This site is like on the 5th page for the EMD keyword.

    The .net and the .org both have had absolutely 0 work done to them, except for installing an empty wordpress install, no content.

    Now the crazy thing, the .net is actually on like page 2 or 3 for the EMD keyword!

    How does that make sense? don't ask me. Obviously the .com was penalized, but still for a blank EMD site to be on page 3 is kind of ridiculous, considering how advanced Google "seem" to be...

    Just makes you think...

    You seem to be missing the fact that while the page does not have any textual content, it has exactly what the visitor is looking for, which is a reverse phone lookup function.

    Somehow I doubt that someone searching for "reverse phone lookup" wants to find an article titled "10 reasons why you should get a reverse phone lookup today!" or some crap like that.

    I've actually tested this on a few sites for the past 5 months. I've got them ranked #1 with nothing but a Heading 1 and an image.

    Most people swear that you must have 1,000 word articles to rank etc. It's just not true.

    That being said, I'd never recommend NOT having great content...you should absolutely have plenty of great content, just understand that it's not always required for you (or someone else) to be ranked #1 on Google.
