Thats awesome! It really depends on the niche, though.. if your entering a competitive or even semi competitive niche, and other sites have been around on the top spots for years, a new site isn't going to come anywhere near them without some sort of seo done on them. People need to be able to find your site in the first place before the natural links come in.

*sigh* I miss the good ol' days where meta tags actually mattered

That's great, anyway SEO is just wasting of time and money. Actually if you deliver unique content and even without SEO ppl will do backlink to your site.

Boy, I have not found that to be true. Only when I had a site in Google News did i ever get back links given to me by others. Other than that, I have to pay someone to do them for me, or do them myself.

Yes sure, that's great and eventually where you'll end up if you keep pushing out great content that people like sharing with friends. But ignoring SEO when you're just starting out is not very smart to be honest. Google is responsible for a ton of traffic for many sites, social media as well, yes, -but a good spot on Google will always bring more traffic than a Facebook post or Twitter link.

Congrats either way, it's good to hear that you're doing well.

SEO is never a waste of time, -ask any successful webmaster whether they agree with you. If you choose the wrong SEO provider, then yes, it can be a waste of money. There are a lot of people selling "SEO services" who don't know the first thing about link building, SEM or internet marketing as a whole.

As for the second part of your statement, yes, good content will always get shared, talked about and used as a reference. But the truth of the matter is you first need to get those great articles seen, -and this is where SEO comes in. If you have a new site with fantastic content, but couldn't care less about SEO, well, good luck with that.

In general, I agree that the content should be the focus. And if you produce great content people will share it/link to it and help your rankings.

    ...But...

Doing solid keyword research and competition analysis really pays off, as well as optimizing your title tags (at the very least).

It sounds like maybe he is doing some sort of free hosting, if the users are doing the SEO for him, unless he is simply speaking of backlinks. But I disagree, good keyword research is vital.

I think it is very important to keep SEO in mind while making the site initially. If you do a good job of architecture, and do some simple things like including keywords in titles and H tags then you really do not need to do much beyond that.

Obviously it helps if your users are self propagating the content. The only thing to keep in mind here is that perhaps if you did some SEO you might even have more traffic...always ways to improve.

I actually find this to be suspect. Over the years, a lot of people have said that they do not do any seo or back linking. Then when pressed, they say "well, I did X, but I didn't do Y". In their mind, they didn't view X as seo or backlinking when in reality, X was just another form of Y. So they were doing seo and/or back linking, just in another form.

I guess that if you are in a truly unique and unusual niche (very hard to find one), it is possible to get a lot of traffic without trying. But in most cases, you have to do something to let people know that your website exist and to cause them to click on it.

Well said. I used to spend hours on seo and decided with my new site to scale back massively. So far it is working out very well, plus a lot less stressful.

In a perfect world or with the perfect idea and probably several developers, but for 99.999999% of us you won't get your site off the ground at all without SEO. Remember SEO includes any link you post on your facebook, twitter page, forums, etc.

You can't get users to build backlinks for you without users. Either you pay adwords to bring them in initially or you build backlinks yourself to bring them in, aka SEO. If your site is compelling enough, it will take off and SEO will have a life of its own through your users, but that takes time and it all starts with SEO and PPC and a great idea.

Oh, and a little luck couldn't hurt either.

If you are using competitive keywords, then it is not possible to rank without SEO.. well, without SEO, you can rank some low competitive/long tail keywords, even your domain should have keywords, age etc.

ctrtheme sounds like the type of person that would eventually have that b word with the six letters under her profile name.

Aside from that I know of very few true marketers that have quality sites relying on word of month for traffic. One of those people is Steve Pavlina, and I'm pretty sure he has an article on his site about it. I could only say the same for myself if I outsourced more, but eh...I don't lol
