I get why some might think google greatly devalued exact match domains but, to be honest, with some old seo and some good content you can still rank these domains a lot easier than regular domains.

I also have a mix domain (half keywords half branding) and no problems at all, ranked really well for a low-med competitive keyword.

  • Greg,

A lot of people had the misconception that the EMD itself was what Google penalized when in fact it was just indirectly related to their algorithm update. The fact that website owners were using EMD’s was not the target of the recent update that wiped many of them off the SERP’s but rather those owners were doing a variety of other things that got them demoted and they happened to be using EMD’s as a part of their strategy. Google (or any other search engine for that matter) really doesn’t care what URL you use as long as you have quality content and you don’t appear to be deceptive in your practices. EMD’s were never a target to begin with.

All methods are still the same, you just need to keep up to date with changes and add a few twists.

I will be curious as to what techniques you used. One of my EMD was hit hard and it still has not recovered on its main keyword so would be curious if I could employ the same techniques to restore it to its former glory.

Yeah I still like to go after EMDs too. Just don't stuff your anchor text too hard.

I never did fearing google would penalize me for it. The way I see it is that EMD still hold a lot of value and someone earlier even pointed me to an interesting article that explained that google did not penalized them at all if they had proper content. I guess it all comes down to that

Of course, Google works in the same way as it was working before, there is just a little changes which you have to understand.

Good. You should have less than 25% of the keywords in URL and use LSI keywords in h1 and h2.
