Hi,

My site currently has index.php as part of the permalinks. I want to get rid of this because I believe it is best practice. However I am worried about the effect it will have on my seo. If I change the permalink I will lose all the backlinks I have created to pages. Can anyone advise?

If a URL changes, then the links to the old URL are broken unless you 301 them to the new URL.

true, you might have to get everything indexed all over again! so if you have achieved some kind of seo succes for your keywords, dont change anything!

If I change the permalinks, the old address won't exist anymore so I don't think I can 301 them as there will be nothing to 301 from.... unless there is someway I can keep them???

I have had some SEO success but I would rather do this now than have to do in a year or 2 years time when I have built more links.......

I take it that a 301 will only redirect people who click on that page. Does it pass the link juice onto the new page aswell?

A 301 passes link juice and anchor text.
