Hi, i have done a couple of niche sites over the past 2 months with about 200 pages on various keywords on a wordpress blog with about 50 categories, but my stats show i am only getting ranked for keywords relating to my domain name.
(I havent done any backlinking as im not sure whats safe these days and it is ranking for some terms)

Does anyone have any tips for ranking for many unrelated topics ?

Ranking somewhat unrelated keywords is sort of what I have been trying to do. I think that it really comes down to posting high amounts of quality content, and then having the site that you are trying to rank for be geared in such a way so that having lots of different sorts of content actually makes sense. For example, About.com probably successfully ranks lots of unrelated keywords because you can write "about" anything. Same goes for an encyclopedic website and so forth.

With all due respect, having "quality" content has very little impact on search engine rankings (at least in the short term).

First, trying to rank 200 pages is not easy and is going to take either a lot of time, or a lot of money. Why not focus on a few of the best keywords and try to rank those first? And by best, I mean a combination of decent traffic and low competition.

This is your answer right here. If you want to rank for anything other than the absolute lowest competition keywords, that probably do not have very much traffic, you've got to get backlinks. SEO is, in my opinion, a balance between risk and reward. Sometimes you have to do things that might not be 100% "safe" if you want immediate results. But that's all up to you.

I haven't implemented this yet, but I think you may have some success creating a large group of posts that are all related to the keyword and then interlink those posts.

Combine this with some low quality web 2.0 backlinks, youtube video backlinks, and guestposting on the same subject.

Let's say you want to rank for "High Fructose Corn Syrup Risks"

create a few more posts like "Cons of Sugar in the Diet", and other LSI keywords.

I think Google would be hardpressed not to give your site credit to the keyword especially if you have some good backlinks (popular video, high traffic guestpost spot).

Also others suggest using an LSI as a category name to put all your related posts in.

Its very very hard to rank for multiple keywords. Focus on a niche rather than on multiple categories. I tried it last year on one of my blog but later six months had to shut it down due to lack of quality traffic.

My advice: Focus on a particular niche to rank for particular keyword and then expand it later for related keywords.

It gets more tricky these days to rank unrelated topics these days.
Look at those directories. Their rankings sucks.

Google is looking at authority sites.
I reckon you can start a authority niche site based on your converting keywords.
Can always backlink to this new site.

hmm. if you have a good pr status on your blog therefore you could rank related posts and keywords easily. its worked for me before but i'm not sure now.

if you have pr1 post not a blog then make sure check it out the keyword and place it in to your ranking keyword post and well optimize the article by bold, italic or underline. after you done it. just ping that post..:-)

Why would you want to rank a single page for unrelated keywords, considering you can create as many focused pages/links as you want? Sounds like your trying to make things more difficult than needed.
