Do High PR Sidebar Links Still Work?

I have a page that I want to optimize, it's sitting on #4 spot without any links at all, just on-page SEO so the competition is, like you can imagine, really low.

So I need a link or two to push it to the top, and I was wondering if buying a permanent PR3 link in the sidebar (along with 20ish other links) would be a good idea nowdays? I've seen an offer on fiverr for $5.

It's been a long time since I played the SEO game, so I'm not informed. I'm also open to any other suggestions.

Thanks,
Zannix

Good quality links are ALWAYS good to have. You can almost only ever get those manually (i.e. no funny business with mass backlinks - they don't work very well at all). The PR of the site is only relevant to a point. Ideally it should be a good site (good authority, trust rank), and ideally relevant to your niche.

Also, build the semantic environment on your site and on the page to strengthen the contextual relationships you've got there.

Also, make sure you have outgoing links to authority (non-competitive) sites in your niche.

Finally, also be sure to have internal links (i.e. within your site, one page pointing to a related one, etc).

Don't overdo keyword anchoring, i.e. use LSI keywords as anchors as well.

Avoid because that site WILL get deindex at some point. You're better of buying an article with a contextual link for a source.

Well the site I've created isn't really an authority site, or anything like that, I just want to rank one page for a term that noone is competing for, and that's it. Just need one or two solid backlinks.

I would not buy a sidebar link, IF the side bar is a true sidebar.
That is, it is shown on every page in the website.

I make a ton of cash selling links on my pages. The brokers
insist it ONLY be on one page, and not sitewide. Always in
        context of an article.

Apparently having a sitewide link to a somewhat "foreign"
website is a tip off that it's a paid link.

If you are looking for some traffic from it as opposed to increasing
your own PR, then get it nofollow'd.

Having said all that, I wold never, ever, ever, ever, but any links
        off of fiverr.

Instead of site wide, sidebar links, why not get several guest blog posts to this page from niche related sites? Also bookmark it to top sb sites - do not spam!

I would avoid side bar links, unless you can get them from niche related site and if this website itself was a high quality, which I doubt you will find for $5.

They will give your site authority, may improve PR of your target page and perhaps impact SERPS, but I would suggest getting just few of them and combine with some contextual links like guest blog posts/etc - will have bigger effect even if used with syndicated content.

There's nothing wrong with getting a sidebar link. Depending upon the quality of the site. I probably wouldn't buy a sidebar link that included 20 other links. The juice that it will pass to your site is diminished by all those other links, and it's pretty obvious that it's a paid link.

But if you can find a sidebar link where there's only a handful of other links, on a quality (high PR) page, it should prove to be beneficial.

I go back and forth on the site wide link issue. Right now my thinking is that having 1 site wide link is fine. But I'm not going to deny that there might be some risk.

Whatever you do, make sure you get a link on a high PR page that will stay high PR. Those people recommending a "contextual" link or a post or article aren't considering that when that link drops off the home page it's going to be on a PR N/A or 0 page. With that said, if you can get a link within the content portion of the page I believe it will carry more weight than either sidebar or footer links.

To answer your question: Yes, sidebar links do help with your search engine rankings. That being said, stay FAR away from any Fiverr link seller. Odds are they will either sell +200 sidebar links or just let the domain registration lapse and do again with another PR3.

Instead, try and find domains that are in the same niche and approach them about a sidebar placement. You should consider penguin when placing your link especially on large websites. On very large websites, I usually use my brand or my URL as anchor text.

Side bar or blog roll links are type of Link Farming and google does not like these type of links.
These type of links are not helpful because site owner sells links to all type of neches and there would be chance of link removal once the site owner received payment so avoid getting links from private networks it will harm your rankings.

Best approach would be to get high PR blog Commenting links from relevant theme.
I have a list of High PR dofollow blog commenting list that I use to boost rankings and it really helps.

Fiverr usually suggest quite crappy links, I mean links with bad (unrelated) neighbor links.
Seek links related to your topic - that would be fine even in sidebar.
