Does the anchor for internal links to homepage count?

Most of the sites or blogs have that "home" link in the upper menu, which sends the users to the home page. Now, what if instead of "home" we will insert our keyword, would it make the homepage rank higher for this particular keyword?

I have tried this technique, but I was unclear of the results. Did anyone try this?

I don't think so.... It won't make the keyword rank higher.

Alright, so you say it doesn't matter.

AT THE SAME TIME - it does matter for any internal pages.

Clearly, something is not right here.

You asked... Will it make the Homepage rank higher?? and now you say it matters for internal pages.... You surely don't know what you're talking about.

I mean there must be a flaw. Why keyword in the link to internal page matter for seo, and the same keyword in the link to homepage doesn't matter for seo? Do you think google is as stupid as that by saying: " hey guys, it looks like these links are pointing to this site's homepage, so we will not count any anchor texts linking to it ". If this is the logic behind it, then it would be 1st - stupid, 2nd - it could be easily circumvented.

Don't matter, that's like saying if I drop a grain of sand into the glass of water will the water level rise... Sure but it's undetectable...

"Home" is a globally recognised anchor text among all search engines. Most search engines rank websites that have a clear and concise navigational system highly. If you are removing the anchor text "home" and replacing it with some obscure keyword you are not giving your visitors a clear link to visit your homepage.

If anything I would say this method would be worse off for your rankings.

Not necessarily. Unless you're really trying to make it confusing.

It might, but not necessarily, moreover we aren't talking about the user perspective as of now. My question is really straightforward, so I would like to avoid any beating around the bush.

The text of the internal links on your website has very low impact on the homepage. If done excessively, Google will make sure you get penalized. Here is a detailed report on SEOMoz.

Yeah, thanks for posting something relevant. It looks like the possible benefit is rather small, but it doesn't suggest that you couldn't increase your ranking by say 1-3% if doing it right.

Other than that the article is not at all exhaustive and Rand refers to a test he made with links in the footer in both experiments. Then couple of years later he did say that footer links could look somewhat spammy. So the result was quite predictable... If we make a prominent link in the menu, as long as the page is relevant to the keyword - than I don't see how could it possible hurt someone at all. Don't you think?
