I bought two domains for my website '.com' and '.co.uk' I plan on using '.com' as my main domain but wanted to buy '.co.uk' to stop competitors using it.

Can you redirect the 'co.uk' website straight to the '.com' website without facing any penalties from google and how would you go about doing this?

Thanks!

  • Amacca,

I see this question a lot and frankly there isn’t a lot of evidence (that I have seen anyway) to suggest of what the impact of doing an arbitrary redirect is. If you bought the domain so that a competitor can’t use it, this is sufficient for stopping them and you don’t need to redirect the domain.

Personally I feel like this strategy promotes a poor user experience. If you are not planning to put content on the domain being redirected, it will be almost impossible to rank it meaning no one will really visit it anyway unless you build backlinks with it.

If it were me I would just park it.

You can redirect your domain by using .htaccess

Such "penalty" does not exist , just redirect it with 301.

Just redirect it, I am guessing your using Cpanel if so do the following.

    Login:
    Click "addon domain"
    add the domain
    then click redirects
    select for type "permanent (301)
    choose your domain (the .co.uk)
in the box below type in your .com domain
then select "Redirect with or without www."
    and click "add"
