Blog commenting is waste of time because most of the links from blog commenting websites are nofollow plus PR juice will be shared for all comments in that blog so no worth of it.

no matter what people say blog commenting always worked and will continue to work. It is not as valuable as before, but you still get a value. Nowadays it is best to use commenting for 2nd+ tiers, not to your main site

There is nothing harmful in using main site while commenting in blogs as long as you are not blasting blogs with some software. High quality blogs gets good attention of the search engines and if you comment on them with a link back to your site, you are blog will get good exposure to the search engines too.

Quality is more important than quantity. This is what I believe in terms of building backlinks. Weather it is blog comment or social boookmarking or directory submission.

yes, for high pr / da / pa sites manual commenting to main site does pretty great job!

There is no "guaranteed" way for Google to automatically know the difference between comments and article content on non-syndicated articles. There may be filtering in the value of backlinks from low quality content in general, but I suspect it will still be effective on large sites if you can get through.

Take everything Google publishes about SEO with a grain of salt... remember, they are just telling you what they "want you to stop doing" - not what they're CAPABLE of stopping. I mean, how many times have we been told PageRank is going away/not important/etc. when in reality it's still the most important factor.

I question why they would tell everyone instead of just doing it. If their intent is truly to increase quality, why tell the spammers what isn't going to work anymore instead of just letting them keep wasting their time on tactics that don't work?

        Agree Samuel.
Google is too smart and they are confusing the SEO.
If you really point out some thing, you will find that on every day, Google is telling that dont do this activity and another day, they tell dont do this activity.

As said earlier they are nice for t2. The problem with blog commenting though is that if a webmaster lets your comment on his page then chances are he will let on just about any person.

Most websites have disabled the URL box in the comments field as it really is just a platform for spam. Auto approve comments are an even bigger waste of time as it just ends up being hundreds of spam posts. You have to ask yourself; do you really want a link from a page with links that anyone can post on there freely? Unless you automate it anyway it is a very poor use of time considering how many comments will even be approved.

There is really no point in the url box on a comments form. I have disabled it on all my sites and any comments with links go directly to my spam. I have an alert above the comment telling people comments with links go straight to spam. It has saved me viewing literally tens of thousands of crap spam comments.

It entirely depends on the process you are following, blog commenting is an important part of off page optimization through which we can get traffic and backlink. Pros and cons depends on selection of blog and the way of commenting .

The only effective way to get traffic via comments is if you manage to get a link into the actual comment itself such as 'read more here', 'take a gander' etc etc. I used this strategy when I first started IM on my first ever website and it worked on a few pages and 1 page was sending me over 100 views a day. Not quite sure why the guy even approved it to be honest. I didn't even read the article just search + copy + paste. Nowadays though every website gets huuuuge amounts of link spam because of bots and such, so most comments of that nature are deleted.

I don't do that anymore though as I think it's pretty disrespectful to go over to someones website and basically say 'hey get off this website and come visit mine'. I don't like putting my new sites URL next to such rude activities and it could come back to haunt you one day.

I do commenting in 2 different ways.

      1. (For Backlinks)

I find posts that are PR1 or higher from moderated blogs that have had some recent activity. (In other words, they're not abandoned.) The best thing to do is leave a comment on one of the more recent posts. Something that you'd approve on your own blog. Too many people leave crappy comments and wonder why they're not getting any approved. Once approved, make a comment or two on an aged post with PR.

Your approval rate is going to be a lot higher since many blog owners set their blogs to automatically approve comments from those who have already had a comment approved. If not, you've at least built some trust and are more likely to have additional comments manually approved.

      2. (For Traffic)

I Use Scrapebox to find posts in my niche that were indexed in Google within the past 24 hours. Then, I run the blogs (not the posts) through a quick PR and / or Alexa check to get a general idea of how popular it is.

I'll then leave a handful of comments on some of the new posts from popular blogs. Being one of the first to comment on a new post from a popular & niche related blog can drive some pretty targeted traffic to your site.

Blog commenting for quite some time has been increasingly
devalued by google. They had to. Nofollow does not work
to stop spam. People are under some delusion that comment
adds to the page. it doesn't. It's just spam.

Remember, google does not take too kindly to people slapping
adsense on pages with comments. That's been around for
a long, long time now. Look up how long I've been saying that.

AND...I have warned people that if they continue to spam blogs,
and allow their blogs (with adsense) to get the same, then
you will get what you deserve. I'm sure many people who
were banned from adsense just refused or did not know that.

Ignorance is no excuse, but it sure abounds.

      Blog commenting rules:

      1) All comments are spam.
      2) In case you think your comment is not spam, refer to #1.

This does not refer to blogs and articles written by sites like yahoo,
huffintonpost, etc. that thrive on such nonsense. But they don't
allow links. Those sites are different animals.

More and more people are going for the FB plugin anyway, and strip out
      html.

But, no matter what, people will still spam comments until their fingers
      turn blue.

No wiseman has the power to reason away what a fool believes.

Like everything in seo it depends how you do it,

if your going to take the time to perform seo it's always best to do it properly.

Use a site like dropmylink and type in a keyword to find some relevant blogs (hopefully you know something on the subject as you've got a site about it)

Then your want too filter through the blogs making sure to leave your comments only on quality ones and by this I don't mean PR. Remember seo is a long term thing so if you leaving links on quality sites most will increase in power overtime as that page/site gets more authority.

everytime you find a quality site put the URL into an excel spreadsheet or something similar and keep track of everywhere you leave a link along with the date. It's the only way your be able to measure the effectiveness of what your doing.

If you do this for each site you'll be able to compare strategy's/results and move forward.

If you were however referring to using scrapebox to blast your link all over the place then forget about such a stupid idea and read the above

Blog commenting works fine and will help you to rank. Don't post your comment on auto approved blogs where thousands of people already have their link. Find blogs in your niche and post valuable comments and READ the article. An active blog admin will not allow too many comments, so your link will give your site some juice.

      Hi,

In my opinion, blog commenting helps only if
      1) You are commenting on do follow blogs
      2) Your comments adds real value to discussion going on there
      3) These blogs already have high PR
      4) These blogs are relevant to your niche

Instead of simply giving link to your home page it would be better if you link to relevant content published on your site & which would add value to the discussion on that blog.

Google considers back link from blogs in same niche more valuable rather than a link from irrelevant source.

I've always been mixed on this issue personally.

I use to use blog comments to my money site (high quality relevant blogs) and we got a few calls from people who said they saw our comment on xxxx blog about xxx topic. At which point I was suprised, and thought it would be smart to keep doing it.

However, we are a local small business, and there aren't a lot of relevant blogs to comment on in the first place. I think I've already left quality comments on all the relevant blogs I can.

At this point, all my good comments have been pushed down, and I'm certaintly not going back to recomment as I don't feel its worth it.

So for my niche specifically, I'm leaning more towards blog commenting being useless.

I'd much rather rank a long tail youtube video, and get it on page 1, then waste my time trying to find more relevant blogs.

Its just a smarter use of time for me.

Blog commenting is FAR from dead. The magic is in being tactical with it.

A relevant comment on a HIGHLY relevant, high authority, high pr (dont overdo this), low obl page does wonders for rankings. Especially when combined with an even link profile (with plenty of contextual links). You can also use them to boost the PR on web 2.0s and make a cheap blog network. Iv'e done a lot of competition analysis and it's not surprising to see a site with a few blog comments being among their strongest links.

If your comment is useful, then blog commenting can be effective. However, it’s not recommended since most blog commenting websites are moderated and it’s very time consuming. Removed comments could cause negative link velocity and may result to decrease in your rankings. Instead of spending your time blog commenting, why not build links from several authority domains – article directory, wiki, social bookmarking, web 2.0s, blog posts, HPBL, etc.

why would they try to devalue this?

internet marketers just ruin it for ppl is all...

but not all IM's do it, everyone does... doesn't all of washington sentors who have like 1million twitter followers, aren't they just bots?

i mean if you think about it, what senator get's 1million or even 100k followers? unless you're obama/biden the losers of the past presidental races, you don't have 100k genuine followers, it's been exposed they were just fake accounts, probably bought by the 20 year old's in charge of "viral" marketing.

I believe blog commenting is good for a website. What you probably deem as a waste of time is if you make comments on a blog just for the sake of commenting and so that you could add your links there, which is what makes your blog comment "illegal," for some sites which do not allow this. The quality of the comment you make is what's important. Blog commenting is a way of networking to others in order to (hopefully) gain traffic to your own blog, as well as imparting what you know to others, in order to help out.

Blog comments still contribute a tiny bit to SEO, be it dofollow or nofollow. Even if it's nofollow, don't forget that google still indexes the pages that your nofllow link is on.

There is no such thing as a powerful, all-in-one backlink either. So just go ahead and post some blog comments every now and then. Needless to say, your comments should make sense to the article especially when google can see.

I comment on a few blogs in my niche each month. I do it to build relationships and add something to their blogs to build a conversation about their article. After I build a presence, I offer a guest article. I dont do it for links from the blog comments, those are weak at best.

Posting good comments that add something to the topic gets noticed and brings people to your site. Guest posting brings people to your site. This is the reason to blog comment, not for some spammy backlink that means nothing.

People are quick to pigeon hole things such as "blog commenting". As already mentioned above, it completely depends on how you go about leaving comments.

Finding quality, relevant, "moderated" blogs that are active and that attract real visitors to leave "real" comments on... that that can only be a good thing. Google will NEVER penalize people for using commenting as they were originally intended. Same goes for forums and anything else.

If you abuse a platform and try and game the system with "spam", then that is only going to go one way... down the pan.

Exactly. The emphasis here isn't just on SEO but traffic in general. The web is connected and sometimes people focus too much on search engine traffic when in fact there are lots of methods and sites in which to get targeted traffic from... both paid and organic.

Leaving informative, quality comments on niche related blogs that are active can often result in blog visitors clicking through to your site to see what you are about. Offer value and you will naturally engage interest.

Leaving informative, quality comments on niche related blogs that are active can often result in blog visitors clicking through to your site to see what you are about. Offer value and you will naturally engage interest.
I frequently look for blogs in my niche(s) and leave comments on recent posts. It's a great way to drive extremely targeted traffic.

Actually blog commenting was mentioned as the first thing to do when launching a campaign the first 4-6 weeks (less than 50 links monthly) in the forever affiliate course. If blog comments are done manually and you post with a real human name and not stuff keywords links etc, it works awesome. Had great success with it. Let me know if you want to know more

For me Blog Commenting is not a waste of time, because it is still one of the best starting places of quality backlinks. Others think it's a waste of time, it's because they abuse it just to get a lot of backlinks.

      Right.

Basically, just leave comments that you'd approve on YOUR OWN blog and you'll be fine.

There are so few DoFollow blogs these days, so you'll be doing a LOT of digging. Fortunately, and this is just my opinion, I think the whole dofollow / nofollow thing is really overblown. So I just try and get links from any source I can. DF or NF. I don't really care.

Of course, blog commenting is good, but you have to do it with quality, use only quality and relevant blogs, and comment regularly and slowly, it would help.

This is a way to make your blog more attractive because you will be able to have a communication with your visitors and readers. These peple will do blog commenting by leaving their meaasage to create a conversation with you. So blog commenting is definitely important in blogosphare and search engine optimization. It can make the difference between blog, a dynamic website and static old fashioned website.

Comment only to blogs that is related to your web niche, that has an approval system (You don't want to post on a blog with auto approval system with thousands of spam comments right? do you?) and have high PR.

and my pro tip for this would be don't ever use your company name or something related on the name and email field. If you haven't read the topic, don't even bother replying as it won't get approve.

I avoid to do this things and most of the time my comment is approved the same day.

I comment on plenty of non-niche related blogs and they get approved. It's just a matter of leaving comments that you'd approve on YOUR own blogs.

only comment on dofollow relevant blogs if your goal is SEO. If you want traffic, comment on high traffic blogs, regardless of whether they are dofollow or not.

Commenting on popular blogs can bring in tons of visitors. Famous blogs like ProBlogger's and John Chow's blogs enjoy high readership. By placing a sensible remark there, their visitors will come streaming to your site.

My site was hit by Penguin 2.1. I'm now on a campaign to remove links on low quality directories, etc.

I also placed backlinks in Blog Comments. In cleaning up backlink profile - should I ask the blogs to remove the comments, or just leave them be?
