How important is a websites domain name when it comes to google ranking the page?

Random example:

A user searches "tablet reviews" in Google.

Both "quality-tablet-reviews.com" and "voomvoom.com" have equally good content - almost identical in quality and both sites are around the same age, popularity and both are SEO optimized. Would "quality-tablet-reviews.com" always have an edge in the page rankings?

If it does offer an advantage - do you think Google at some point will release an algorithm update which stops any advantage?

You are mixing up the real world with what people do when they try
    and sell their EMDs.

Real world people doing real world searches from a real computer
in real time have no such interference.

That's why a typical big website could care less. They care about
things that matter. Not what some domain selling seo guru says.

That's why you are on the warriorforum.com rather than
    internetmarketing.blah blah blah.

It's what you do WITH the site. Always has been, always will be.

People have just done parlor tricks to show otherwise, and now
of course misquoting something from google.

I think you got your voomvooms mixed up.

Not completely sure I follow your post, basically "nobody cares about your domain just the content"?

What if you could use either a partial match domain or something completely random for the same price, which would you pick?

I agree with Paul - the domain name makes no difference.

You might even get better clickthroughs from the serps by NOT having a emd type domain.

This not the issue with domain if you found .net domain then use it and upload your website on this domain. If you will do SEO better than that guy then your website will rank higher. As you said that the guy is not using .com domain then by doing basic SEO your site can be SERPs. I suggest you to use .net domain rather than .biz.

Simple if you choose emds youll be limited on that particular keyword. While if you chose broad brandable domain you could expand your niche into different areas.

I've got a handful of PPC campaigns that are doing just fine running as sub-domains on a pretty generic domain.

An exact match domain’s power to rank fast has minimized after several algo updates. Prior to the EMD update, Google has given EMDs a good boost even if those sites don’t have lots of quality backlinks. Whether you have an exact match or just an ordinary domain, what matters most is still the overall strength of the domain wherein those ranking on the top got high volume of quality backlinks. The quality of links will lead to a better site.

Your example search answers your own question perfectly. I searched for 'tablet reviews' and NONE of the first page results had the term in their domain.

It's all about the brand that you build around the domain.

Who do you think of when you think of streaming video? YouTube...NOT streamingvideohq.org.

    How about ecommerce? Amazon.
    Search? Google.

    You get the idea.

In 2013 you'd have to be on drugs to buy a keyword-rich domain. It doesn't help with SEO and it's almost impossible to brand.

Instead, think of something unique that represents what you do.

Look at sites like QuickSprout.com. That site is about IM. But it's memorable and unique.

That's the type of domain you want to go after.

After all, Google is paying less attention to keyword rich domains and more attention to brands.

So get out there and build one : )

Domain name represents both the web address of your website and the name your site visitors will use to refer to your site. It is likely be the first thing that your potential customer will encounter and remember to your company.

It doesnt' matter. Like someone else said, if companies like Amazon cared about that crap, then they wouldn't be Amazon...they would be thingsandshitandotherthingsanddoodadsandmorestufff oragreatdiscountedpriceandweshipreallyfasttoo.com
