How To Find Sources For SEO Backlinks

The most confusing part of SEO is knowing where to find sources of backlinks. I'm by no account an expert at SEO but I have discovered a simple way to find places to add your links. It's actually pretty simple. Instead of finding the backlinks on your own why not copy somebody else?

All you have to do is find a high-ranking website with a PR 4 or above. Obviously those people know what they're doing. Go to Alexa.com, click on "Site Info", and type in their web address. You should get a list of of some of the websites that are linking to them. Another great site to visit is BacklinkWatch. The thing I don't like about that site is that the results are generated slowly and they keep on coming up with the same sites over and over again.

You can also search Google for a website's backlinks by entering a simple code. I came across this article which tells you how to do that.

How to check backlinks to website, find backlinks with Google search.

Don't forget that the only backlinks that actually count are DO-FOLLOW backlinks. Add an extension to your browser such as this one to identify links with the NO-FOLLOW attribute.

Also don't forget that links on pages with PR juice are the most valuable. But links with the keywords you're going for in the anchor text are also valuable even with no PR.

But the most valuable backlinks are ones on pages that are perfectly relevant to the keywords you're going for with high PR and low OBL (few backlinks on page).

Greg, nice post. While backlinking on high PR, authority sites is important, many follow a tiered linking strategy, where your Tier 1 links (links pointing to your main page) are built up in "importance" by Tier 2 links -- links linking to your Tier 1 links, and so on.

But I disagree that no-follow links simply "don't count", per se. I think you might be conflating no-follow with no-index, just by a quick glance at the post. For instance, all Twitter links are no-follow. But mine are indexed quickly, frequently, and regularly.

So ... while yes, PR may not be affected by no-follow (for those who care about PR), rankings and subsequent page value are affected positively, imo. And of course, no-follow links are also good for human traffic ... people coming to your website (the best type of SEO!).

As far as link juice is concerned, you just have to ask yourself: "What's better? (a) My link on a PR 7 webpage (not just a website -- THAT page) with 200 other links? Or (b) my link on a PR 5 webpage with 1 other link?

In the first (a) scenario, you're getting 99.5% link dilution, whereas in the second scenario, you're getting only 50% link dilution -- and consequently more link juice is passed on. It's just a calculation everyone will need to decide on their own as to what's better for whatever their purposes are.

In short, sure ... you want your primary tier 1 links to be primarily do-follow, but I think it's beneficial to have both do-follow and no-follow links for a variety of purposes. So I wouldn't avoid linking on a page just because that page's links are rel=nofollow.

you should maintain a natural link profile, your anchor text is important, the amount of targeted anchor text links you have should be much less than the neutral anchor text like the domain

    also no-follow links count

You can copy your competitors too, but the thing is you may not be able to do it, it may be that your competitors are linking to any blog network, used some paid links, established their reputation with top forums etc..
