PR Question

On the forums, I often see the line:
"Try to get a link from high PR websites".

But isn't PR, limited to certain pages? it being PAGE rank.
For example, a websites homepage could be PR7 and their blog posts could be PR1.

Assuming that somebody made a comment with a link/ posted a link in the forum/ anything else on the Blog page. What PR would that link be?

    Domain PR doesn't equal page PR. For example, Twitter is PR10 but my Twitter profile is PR0 so tweeting backlinks doesn't equal PR10.

    This seems to be a common misconception on this forum.

    Thanks for the clarification smodha, much appreciated.
    In that case, would that make blog commenting a bit redundant?

    I see a lot of users on here use Blog commenting for back-linking, but wouldn't a freshly posted blog have a 0 or n/a PA? Making it a bit redundant.

    Or would a comment link pass the Domain PA?

    I have SEOQuake installed and can only see PA, are thy're any tools that show Domain PA?

      PR is updated constantly by Google. The toolbar that we can see only gets updated a few times a year on average, but they have gone 10 months or so with no updates before.

      So if you find a blog where the homepage is a PR 7 and they post a new post that is linked to from the homepage, the post page will show as a PR 0, but in reality it is probably around a PR 5. If you leave a link on that page, you would be getting a link from a PR 5 page (or whatever the real PR is), but the page is still going to show as a PR 0 in any PR checkers until the next toolbar update.

      Now if that post rolls off the homepage and does not have any links directly from their, it is probably going to end up with a much lower PR. It will depend on the site's internal link structure. If it is 1-2 hops to the post, it still will probably end up with some PR. If it is buried deep, the page is most likely going to end up a PR 0.

      Despite what many backlink sellers will tell you, a PR 0 link is a PR 0 link no matter what the PR of the homepage is.

      There are blogs with PR4+ that accept guest posting. I have seen the benefit both in terms of traffic and a boost in rankings. Obviously, you need to add value and engage with the conversation. Don't go posting things like "Great post! I was looking for this. A++" and expect a link in return.
