Is There Any Way To Confirm Which SEO Tips Are Fact or Theory?

There are so many blogs, books, e-books, courses and advisors on the topic of SEO. Sometimes it can get a bit overwhelming. But one question I have is how do you know what you're hearing is true? Does Google give out this information? Or are a lot of the SEO tips out there simply theories that were cooked up by smart people trying to think like Google?

    Yes:
    • Do your own testing.

I've done my own testing and some of the conclusions I've come up with are contradictory to what some people are saying.

If you've done your own testing then that is great. Learn what works and what doesn't YOURSELF, have proof, and sell that information to warriors on this forum.

Not all seo strategies work for every niche or keyword. That's why I take what people say and test it out myself. If it doesn't work then I know MYSELF that strategy doesn't work for this niche or keyword. I read all the time about how certain types of backlinks don't work anymore and its simply not true. I know this because I test it out myself. So I continue to do what works and stop what doesn't.

      This...

Start your own "SEO lab" and test the claims out for yourself. I did this for 2 years before I started to make serious money online.

But what if the increase in visitors was due to something else? I believe Google uses CTR, Bounce Rate and Percentage Of Returning Visitors to determine whether your site is relevant for particular keywords. Those factors are less controllable and could confuse people as to why they're ranking at the top for certain keywords.

They are both fact and theory.

The things, by themselves, that are theory, are those
things that people list as a guarantee way to #1.

Everybody does the same plain brown wrapper SEO.
The stuff that people (for the most part) cannot control
is what determines who is #1 or not.

Remember, appearing on page 5 is still a product of SEO.

But you appearing on page 5 is also a result of someone
      else's SEO.

Anyone that tells you they have a secret for getting to
#1, is telling you about a theory.

As stated, test. What works for you is different than
someone else. It has to be. The internet and the people
that search it, are dynamic, not static.

      That's my theory anyway.

Good points here. There's a huge amount of factors to account for. Like on one of my sites I hired someone who ended up posting random pinterest viral-type images linking to my site to boost my traffic.

It's 100s of images that I can't remove with no relation to my niche that are bringing traffic to my site that instantly bounces to ruin my visitor stats! I have not been able to recover that site in google.

On an unrelated note, negative SEO is still alive and well...

things change but the face still remains that you might be reading an outdated post from a person who sincerely tested (but it's not applicable now) or somebody that just posted a tactic to sell something

    - Do your own testing. Usually, you will see that the tactic does work, but it varies on effectiveness and sometimes will get you in trouble. At least you learned and not just assumed. That's the only way you will really progress. Fail early.

The best way to know which is fact or not is by doing your own case study to know which one works for you. Most people have different strategies but still they're able to succeed. By doing your own experiment, you're learning along the way. Experience is still the best teacher.
