I get conflicting answers to this video ranking question...

Say I do a google search using my keyword(s), and I see NO VIDEO on page one.

School of thought #1 says, DO NOT ATTEMPT to rank a video for that keyword -- because google has pre-determined NOT to allow a video to show up on page 1 of that search. (I believe there is something called a "search packet" or "search envelope" or something.)

School of thought #2 say, DO ATTEMPT to get a video there because there are NONE now, so that will make it EASIER to get mine in that position.

WHO'S RIGHT!?!?!?

I will let Napoleon Hill answer this one. "Where there is nothing to lose by trying and everything to gain if successful by all means try. Do it now!"

For practical purposes just invest as little time as possible testing.

One of the most important lessons I have learned in a decade of marketing is NEVER stop testing. The rules change daily and to be honest the ones profiting from the changes will not be in a hurry to let you know.

I constantly hear this does not work, that stopped working a year ago... blah blah blah
Marketing is like fashion, your grand kids will be wearing wide leg pants lol
    just keep testing.

I'm not sure which helps, but I've managed to rank videos in both situations. Myself, I prefer to see no videos. That's not to say you can't outrank a video already there by reverse engineering their stats, and bettering their numbers.

Also, I think its important to rank not only on Google but on YouTube as well. Since its the 2nd biggest search engine and people are looking for videos, it makes sense to me to rank on there and Google.

I don't think there is a 100% rule for this, nothing with Google is 100%. I have seen SERP results with no video one day and video the next. And I have ranked videos on first page when previously there were none. So in my opinion you should go for it either way.
