Backlining is going to drive me to drinking

So I keep reading on how important back links are, and so I have spent the last few days trying to do back linking. I will be damned if I can figure out how it is done.

I bought the lists that are sold on WF as they are so well thought of by everyone. And I got to say that Angela has been great at answering my stupid questions. But I have yet so see a link show up for me. I don't know what the hell I am doing wrong. I didn't think I was stupid, but I am starting to wonder.

I just posted something on a site and got the following junk in it that wasn't in the text that I entered.
/* Style Definitions */
table.MsoNormalTable
{mso-style-name:"Table Normal";
mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0;
mso-tstyle-colband-size:0;
mso-style-noshow:yes;
mso-style-parent:"";
mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;
mso-para-margin:0in;
mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt;
mso-pagination:widow-orphan;
font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:"Times New Roman";
mso-ansi-language:#0400;
mso-fareast-language:#0400;

I had similar stuff like that in one of the posts I did from Angela's list a few days ago. Nothing I did would remove it. It wasn't there in my post, but after I publish it, it appears. No matter how many times I edit it to try to get rid of it.

So, is there a secret society that I have to join to be able to get things to work right. Or what.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant. It is a rant. I had to get it off my chest though. It just gets so frustrating to hear how others are doing this stuff, and I struggle with such basic simple stuff and can't do it.

    It looks like the site you posted to is using MS FrontPage. That's the kind of style code MS inserts to make documents cross-compatible with other MS apps (Excel, Word, etc.).

    Not much you can do about it...

    It's one of the big reasons I stopped using FP a few years ago.

      Did you perhaps wrote something in Word copied and pasted it into your browser... whenever I wrote something in word I first copied it over to notepad and then copy and paste it into my browser.

      Hope this helps

      No, it's not from FrontPage. Frontpage gets a lot of flak and for good reason but this isn't one of those reasons. That extra junk is caused by cutting from Word and pasting into a text object designed to receive HTML input. This could be an editor window in FrontPage or a HTML entry box in the post editor section WordPress admin area.

        You're right. I misread the original post. I thought the extra code didn't show up in his source code - went back and re-read 'didn't show up in the text'.

        Thanks for the catch - I hate putting out misinformation...

        Sorry about that, Tim

    Yes, I copied if from MS Word. I knew better than this, and still I did it. My dementia is starting to show up. It always seems like it is some stupid simple thing that I forget to do. O well. Thanks folks.

    when you paste a text into ms word from a website, it appears fine but the code is still there thats why when you paste it back to your blog or whatever, the code comes along. the safest way is to paste it in notepad.

    If you're not using Frontpage, then what do you recommend instead?

    Hi Tim,

    How long have you been waiting for your links to show up? Where are you checking? It often takes a while for them to be "counted."

    Even then, Google doesn't show them all when you check with their command. Yahoo Site Explorer is a bit better.

    I'm sure it has nothing to do with your intelligence, lol...just the whims of the search engines.

    Frances - Use a plan text editor for any docs you plan on copying into blogs or comments. Notepad will work (on every windows computer) or you can also get a really good text editor from Notetab (Award-Winning NoteTab Text Editors and HTML Editors). The light version is free and has spelling checker and lots of useful features.

    On the links showing up, it depends on when the search engines check the website, then some won't show until new indexing. Some show up in a matter of days, others longer.

    Backlinking is the slowest, most boring part of my job. But if you can find the right websites, it's also one of the most effective for traffic both in direct clicks and from increasing your rankings in the search engines.
