I think it's a good keyword, do you?

I asked this question earlier but I think the message got lost in a wall of text that I wrote: more direct approach.

If my keyword gets 10000 local searches a month, and the first url that comes up when it is searched for is a forum and the rest of the results are amazon links on the first page, is that worth going for?

If so, is there another good way to rank for this keyword without vomiting onto every blog post I write?

A good method to check if you have good chances to rank high in the search engines is first to install a specific toolbar that will give you a lot of info about any single result in Google. It's called SEOquake.

When you install it, type your keyword in the search bar and then check the results below. If on page one are only results with page rank up to 3/4, you will have good chances. Even 5 is not really high.

The second thing you will need to do is to spend 50-70 bucks on 3 PR 5 backlinks.

IMPORTANT! - The pr links must be home page links - You can learn more about seo here. I personally have learned the most SEO knowledge from this blog: Source Wave : SEO Blog.

If you move up to pages 3/2/1 within 3/4 days after purchasing these PR5+ links, you will have good chance to beat your competition in the future.

You can read also this post. It's a complete blueprint, that you can follow:

Thanks Alex I will check it out! Is it safe to say then that my assumption that the other search results just being amazon products doesn't say much for being able to easily rank for that keyword?

If on page 1 you see results like, forum threads, eBay listening, Amazon listening and etc. it will be easier for you to beat your competition, but keyword research is a combination of factors, so make sure to check everything.

I have just tested a niche that has a potential for $100/day and I have ranked a website for a keyword with 4400 exact monthly searches on page one, #6, without a single link, but my competition got the site down. (I am still investigating this case, so I don't know the reason yet)

So the keyword research is 99% of the work, not backlinking...

Make sure to spend even a month on keyword research, instead of spending a year on backlinking without results.

A well written blog can easily compete with a forum.

If you target a few good low competition keywords you could easily outrank the forum and amazon links -- after the domain has been established for a few months. This will be an investment of a fair amount of time depending on how active the forum is--

Above all, don't be afraid to join the forum and build some good signature links and articles. You can't start out ahead in the rankings-- this is a good technique to build traffic and an audience.

In these days there is no need for establishing in the low competition market. With the right keyword research you can reach page one in less than 24 hours for keywords with more than 5k/10k exact monthly searches and all of this for complete new websites.
