The Death Of Adsense and similar ads?

So many of you are fairly familiar with browser addons that block ads. To be honest I can't blame users. Websites like Youtube are the primary cause of the increasing popularity of ad blockers in my opinion. These ads force people to endure the most invasive ads possible. Being forced to watch a 1 minute advertisement to then view a 30 second video is like getting metaphorically brain raped by a corporate pigs. Can you imagine the pain a person would have to endure if the likes of Justin Bieber had an advertisements playing before their video? He has the ability to increase bounce rate to 99%.

The problem with people downloading an ad blocker for youtube is that ad blockers by default block every type of advert everywhere, unless you actually spend the time to set it up to do otherwise. But how many users ever consider us webmasters when installing an ad blocker? Probably none.

The thing is that ad blockers are now ever growing in popularity. There are a few things it can't detect and block though such as an image ad with a link to a website. For example if I was selling trampolines for dogs then I could create an image ad to my Ebay auction or official dog trampolines selling website. Maybe the day will come where we will need to replace traditional ads such as Adsense with our own products. I know a lot of people using ad blockers wouldn't click on adverts anyway but it is only a matter of time until your average joe or IT illiterate simpleton catches on too. And lets face it. IT illiterate simpletons are the biggest money makers for adsense revenue. Considering the ever growing popularity of chrome and how ridiculously easy the ad blocker is to install, even a dyslexic baboon with saucepans for arms could install it.

What do you other webmasters do to try to combat people using adblockers and save your revenues? Do you see this becoming a real issue for webmasters relying on these types of ads in the future?

    Well, written!
What I think is in coming years Google would do something do change their ad code in the way. So that no ad blocker would block it. If this happens we, bloggers would be able to earn more

Maybe so. However they have been changing it for a while (for Youtube anyway) and the ad blockers just update. I can't see them beating it any time soon. It seems the same with Youtube to MP3 converters too, they can't stop them (and they would certainly like to, especially the music industry). It's a giant game of whackamole as presumably they are restricted by what web the based programming languages are capable of. Furthermore the ad blocker is client side so the ap developers are always going to have an easier time staying a step ahead, since they can work with more powerful programming languages.

The hilarity of it all is that Google say they're against spam yet nothing is more spammy than those Youtube ads. I would rather close 5 pop ups or see 5 adverts above the fold than watch an obnoxious 1 minute video advertisement. Youtube needs to be hit in the next panda refresh IMO.

They are annoying the ads especially on Vivo they appear on every music video. When Google refers to being against spam aren't they talking about unsolicited mail, spam blogs, etc.. These video ads at least offer something at the end of it instead of just there to advertise unlike a spam blog.

Adsense is not dead it is still alive. But keep banning people for invalid clicks.

No one is saying it is . I make a nice chunk of my living from Adsense at the moment however it may not be sustainable for the future if ad blockers continue their steady rise in popularity.

They also penalise sites for too many ads above the fold, popups etc. Anything that reduces user experience in an overly negative way to make money essentially.

Google is working on this problem. Google has recently banned adblock extensions from Chrome webstore and adblock app from Google Play. This would reduce the number of people blocking ads to some level. I hope they take more action than this.

Apart from this, you can use anti-adblock script on your website, so if someone blocks ads, you show a message or redirect them to another site. But it can further annoy some people.

You can find more information here : Antiblock.org - Anti Adblock Script

Say what? That's not true, where did you hear that? Google has not taken AdBlock off the shelf in their Web Store. In fact Google does a darn good job of promoting AdBlock by exclaiming AdBlock is

"The most popular Chrome extension, with over 10 million users!"

The quote above was taken from the Chrome Web Store. As of today, you will find find AdBlock ready and waiting at the Chrome Web Store.

Your only thinking about yourself, your not thinking about the amount of bandwidth Youtube would have to pay ($$ millions). Bandwidth isn't free, not even for Google.

Youtube is a business, the goal is to turn a profit, not blow money for fun.

Look at your own web host, the more bandwidth your traffic burns up, the more money it cost you (everyone). When a host advertises unlimited bandwidth, it's not really unlimited, If your traffic starts bogging down a shared server the host will shut you down until you upgrade your hosting.

Nobody is going to pay your bill for bandwidth just like nobody will pay Youtubes bandwidth (besides Google/Youtube). Advertisements pay Youtubes bills (bandwidth).

Your looking at Youtube advertisements from an end user view, not from a business perspective, which is Youtubes purpose for existing. If anyone doesn't believe that, go ask the owner of Wikipedia why he sometimes begs for donations (bandwidth cost money).

Every major web browser manufacturer with exception of Firefox has an ad network. And even Firefox makes a large chunk of revenue from sponsored Google search.

While these ad blocking plugins are an issue, because the major web browser development houses are involved in ad networks, I am guessing they wouldn't cut their own hand off by installing the ad blocking script on all of their browsers in the on state with every installation.

That being said, Adsense is nowhere near its death bed.

I just don't see these adblockers gaining enough traction.

I have been meaning to install one myself for a long while now. And even right this minute, I want to install one, but I won't.

Not because I'm lazy, not because I care who's making money and who's not. Its a lot deeper than that. Deep down inside, I think I actually want to be raped by ads. Its such a rooted part of our culture and society. You expect it everywhere you go. On the road, in stores, malls, tv, radio, there is no escaping ad rape.

It makes people feel like they're needed. If only to rape them repeatedly with ads.. it makes them feel important. When they install adblockers, verbally, they might be saying "no", but subconsciously, they're really saying "yes". They're not fooling anybody. They just want advertisers to try harder. So they can feel loved again.

Thats why you really shouldn't worry about it.

    Good insights but I disagree.

This is just like another SEO is dead thread.

Also, people have been claiming the death of ads because of ad blockers since like when they first heard of it.

    and also:
Google Has Started Removing Ad Blockers from the Play Store

  • Ad blockers have been in existence for years and some users will have them some wont it's that simple. By ad blocker I mean anything blocking whatever the "latest" tech is. 15 years ago it was popups, for example. Popups still exist, as you all know .

If we are talking about google adsense, remember, it's GOOGLE lol. They will adapt as needed, in my opinion, to ensure their revenues and as a result there should always be money to be made with them

      Strong 6th post.

It's true: why are you worried? Do you think Google is going to let some open source ad blocker mess with their bottom line? Riiiight.

Google will defiantly have a work around for this if it starts to cut into their massive revenue from adwords.

I don't see this being a (major) problem ever.

I think if I continue to average $20 to $40 per day, I am okay with using Adsense. But if it drops, I will need to re-think my ads

From the customer point of view, I prefer to see some ads instead of paying for any product I use. However, when things are getting serious, free means no support, no upgrades, etc. I prefer to pay an amount of money to get something serious, but only for professional parts, not for games and chrome extensions.

From the advertiser point of view, adsense earnings are almost a joke right now. There are other forms of advertisments too. Maybe the most profitable is to promote other products, either trough affiliate marketing or taking a flat fee for promoting. However, this works most only for blogs ( the sponsored part ), and wither way ( adsense or affiliate marketing ), you neglect your product to promote ads or affiliate offers.

If your product is worth using, then charge a fee, even if it is small. You will make much more money than on adsense or affiliate marketing, and you will have more time and resources to invest in the product to make it better.

If you just provide copied product or content, you may think of creating your own, or think at some features that you can add so your product will be better from others freely available.
