I have targeted some easy long tail keywords and rank #1 with not much effort from my part, now though I am thinking of how to modify my titles and content to rank for harder keywords.

Example of my current title is a variation of a harder keyword like best top rated the year, review and so on example top 10 nike air shoes reviewed.

Lets say I rank #1 for the exact phrase top 10 nike air shoes reviewed

Lets say I rank #2 or top 10 nike air shoes

and #9-page 2 for top nike air shoes

What would your methology be to rank for nike air shoes then nike shoes or similar harder keywords with the existent content?

Or would you create an article on nike air shoes and have supporting content the previous ranking content ?

With existing content it will be very hard to start to rank for just "nike shoes".

If you are after such keywords you should in fact setup your site in such way right from the start, for example by naming a category "nike shoes", and then a dozen or so posts about it to help the inner relevancy. Good inter linking between the posts and a ton of juice pointed at the category page and perhaps a few links to the posts.

You can also send a ton of juice to the homepage and let it go from there but it would be much harder (more expensive) to achieve your goals for tougher keywords so better send a bit more on content to make your job easier.

That is the main reason why I limit myself to specific products like:

    office chairs
    hair dryers
    upright freezers

And then make a 20-40 page site where each post is relevant to the homepage.

When I try to rank a site I use the same strategy as I use in my services, and that strategy works best on 20-40 page sites, and the best / reviews keywords like "best nike air shoes" or "nike air shoe reviews", for authority sites there is a lot more juice needed to lift the main category keywords.

Either way to rank tougher keywords while running out of link resources, limited sized network for example, then you can dedicate high PR domains specifically for those keywords, obvious not cheap. At least that's what I recommend most of my clients.
